RE: WANTED : Reliable Student Car

I heard VW's can be expensive to fix.

Other than the timing belt and water pump, anybody else have any comments on VW's ?

We may be looking at a 02 Passat this weekend.

Regards, Scott (LandShark ...)

You will drown in red ink with an old Passat. I've owned 2 and 3 Jettas. 02 Passat was not noted for reliability. Window motors and regulators, radiators, axle shafts, wheel bearings, leaky steering racks, I could go on but.... Sorry, just trying to save you a lot of headaches. Also brake & fuel lines will likely need to be redone.

Scott, how much do you want to spend for a car?

I still can't say enough about our 2004 Echo Hatch. Son finds it super easy to drive. 190km and the ball joints are still tight as new. Only now do I have to replace a sway bar link and the control arm bushings are going thanks to the terrible roads in my area. I average 40mpg with it (auto trans) and I don't baby it. No timing belts to worry about. My brother in law has something like 400k on his and he beats the crap out of his. The AC still blows cold!

Thanks for the link Carl.

I should have updated this post awhile ago, as my daughter ended up getting a 2004 Honda Civic, with reasonable miles on it.

If I hear of anyone else looking for a used car, I'll spread the work about this Grand Prix.

Regards, Scott (LandShark ...)
