When 4-barrel carbs were small, running a pair was a way to get some decent CFM. A pair of Carter WCFB carbs on a 265 or 283 would let them wind out. Once the 348 came out, the multi-carb 283 was dropped (except on Corvettes which offered them through 61).

In the mid 70's I had a 265 with 2 4 barrels out of a Jeg's Automotive sponsered 56 Chev race car with a 2 speed powerglide with 5:13 gears. The car was in Timmins for a few years than sold to someone in the south less engine and tranny. I think the car was called The Wayback Machine or something similiar. It did not have theBat Wing Air Cleaner.
Clifford intakes make them to this day, tripower too, any configuration you can imagine. Two two barrels, two four barrels, tripower two barrels or four, can have dummy carb set up too, three four barrels and only middle works, tripower 6cyl? Yup that too. Three one barrels all working or not, three two barrels etc, if you can imagine it, they can build it.
Yes they were small carbs CFM wise. Leaky. both gas and air. Multiple carbs didn't necessarily transmit into more power. Better performance on the street with a larger size single 4 bbl for most applications. Unless you are running WOT as in drag racing they are more for show than go.
Hello 409 Safari, while on a visit to my sisters winter trailer in Florida we all went to a cumquat festival and there was a small car show in a parking lot. First I saw a very nice 1961 Catalina bubbletop and then I spotted A gorgeous ivory and coral 1956 Chevy Belair with an original 265 V8 four barrel. I asked the owner if he put the engine in the car and he claimed to be the second owner and the original owner special ordered the car in 56 in California and normally it would have only been found in a Corvette but the fellow had special connections in Chevrolet and got the car as it sat. The car was a 3 speed standard and this was in the winter of 2012..........regards................T Miller Sebringville, Ontario

In 1956 Chevrolet in the U.S. was trying to gain a reputation in racing. The Corvette program was generating some nice bolt-ons that spun off onto the regular passenger car line. With the help of Vince Piggins & Zora Duntov they offered some high performance goodies over the counter (or sometimes factory installed out the back door to those well connected). I wouldn't doubt the story of the Corvette engine in a 56. Of course the AMA racing ban of 1957 threw a monkey wrench into that kind of activity. Sort of...

265 V8 was available in any Chevy in 56, + the Power pack option, that included 4 bbl. carb & duals!!! So I think the " corvette" connection" story is B/S just MOP. pete

In 1956 both Chevrolet and Canadian Pontiac offered the 265 with dual four barrels as a factory option. I have a letter from GM from 1973 that confirms the 265 dual four barrell was available for the Canadian Pontiacs in 56. They did not know how many were sold but it was available. In 1957 the 283 Fuel injection was also availble in Canadian Pontiacs but apparently none were sold. I did a search on 1957 fuel injection units once and there is no record of any units being sent to Oshawa. The site I found had the serial number of the units and what plants and dealers they were shipped to.

So, here's how they looked in Vettes back then (this pic is not of the one I saw back in '77, that I wish I would have bought, but I bought a 427 '67 instead)
When i owned my 57 Bel Air four door hardtop (sport sedan), the car came with a factory Power Pack 220 hp single four option. In the mid to late 80's i started putting together a dual quad set up for my 57. I got the correct intake, all the proper repro linkages, all the proper repro gas lines, the decals and minor small parts that were required. Once i came to grips with the cost of the dual four air cleaner and the special carb for the front that had no choke, i had to give up and pack it in. There was no way i was spending that kind of money. I sold everything i had to a guy from Quebec that drove to Toronto to buy my stuff. The positive note is that i easily doubled my investment. Just as a side note the term "Bat Wing" when refering to the dual quad air cleaner is not a period correct term and never a GM term. The word was created by Bill Clement from Lubbuck, Texas that sold mostly tri five Chevy stuff. He made up that term and for some reason it has stuck. Another thing i find odd is folks saying that dual fours created no power and were only for looks ....... what. Cheers.

You made me get off the couch and dig out one of my old books George!! Thanks...haven't looked at it in a long while! 57 was 220hp@4800 with 4v ,245@5000 with 2-4v and 270@6000 with 2-4v. Also thought the 57 was one of the first to get 1 HP per cu in..but think it's 3rd or forth. Think chrysler did it in 57 on carbs...but chevy on FI

Chrysler did it with the Hemi and two four barrels. Chevy did it with the 283 and F.I. in the same year. I am far more impressed with what Chevy accomplished. Cheers.
