me again..........first thanks to all those that sent in helpful hints on the rattle. It turned out to be the front main bearing of the transmission is breaking down.
So my new project is does anyone know of a good shop that repairs these tranys or what can is swap it out with. Mine is the torque tube type.
hey guys........thanks for all the help so far. If I can baby it through the summer that will give me more time to look for a used one or wait and rebuild it myself this winter. Keep the ideas and help coming.
thanks MICKYG for the article on the rebuild. If I rebuild it I will surely let you know. Will a Chevy trans fit in my 51 Poncho. There seems to be more of them around but I'm not sure which one I should be looking for...........any ideas
thanks again for steering me in the right direction with the proper bearing. I have located a couple of 1953/54 units, one with a blue flame motor installed but I am not sure if either one will fit. My 1951 pontiac repair manual does not have much info on the torque tub other than it has the screw on ring at the rear most part of the trany to keep oil in but does not show where the universal is. If it had more details about what is going on then I could probably make a decision on the trany I need.
I will keep searching before I commit to anything. I gotta drive while the weather is so good, just keep my speed down to 55 mph.
there's serial number on the trans side cover just below the shift arms ..... it should tell you if it's the same .
I'm almost certain they are the same as a 49-54 chevy .
