49 pontiac

hey all Well progress is being made, the 49 is 90% polished out and today was a big day in that the motor and trans were slid back into their home.I promise some pics soon but the iPhone and computer are not getting along right now.Anyways I do have a few questions as I got this car semi disassembled and the factory manual is pretty vague in more than a few areas. So I am hoping some one has a stock 49 and can snap a few pics ad answer my questions.First of all there is a rod/linkage that runs behind the motor across the firewall,i need a few pics of how it mounts and the brackets on each end and where the springs attach to and go to.Second on the transmission(mine is the three on the tree, there are two rods the connect up to the transmission. Two rods on d.s side of transmission, what position should they be in when the car in in neutral and a pic of how they are routed would be nice.Oh yeah on a side note I got the new master cylinder swapped in,what are you using for brake fluid these days dot 3?

Ok lets see if this works,a little progress, alot of questions. So some pics of the engine before going in and put in car. Also here is a pic of the linkage that I have questions about mounting and how it all hooks up.I roughly put it in place but why the manual does not have a pic or parts blowup of this is beyond me.Nest I went to put on the fuel pump and of course there was this nice new shiny one that came with the car.Now I can't remember if it had one on when I got it and I searched through my boxes of parts at home and no original pump.I will have to check at work tomorrow as I may have taken it off there when I removed the motor. Now does the glass bowl go up or down for my first queation.Second this car has the remote oil canister up on the motor and I have the passthrew bolt for the oil line but it doesn't fit through this new pump.I think I could just drill the holes a little larger cause it seems to fit otherwise. The trans levers I had questions about were not the ones that hook up on the column, mine are still intact,i am asking about the two levers on the side of the transmission, there are two 1/4 in shift rods with cotter pins that hook into them, what position are those two levers in neutral or does it matter?Anyways thanks for the help, progress is being made, soon to start putting all the shiny trim back on.I upgraded a bit as I ordered the front and rear window seals with the groove for the stainless trim.I found a complete set of front trim, now just to track down the rear.Added a little bling as the car was just plain rubber trim before.Same for the rock guards on the rear doors, they were rubber but I have a chrome set to put on.Did the Pontiacs ever come with the front fender gravel guards?I have a set from a 49 chevy I could install but I have never seen a Pontiac with them.

progress?yes i'm thinking I am going in the right direction.I installed a few more parts on the motor, got the distributor in,figured out a bunch of the mystery lines, etc.I put the new master cylinder in place and figured out the box of brake lines and parts, just have to do the final tighten and fill and bleed the brakes and I should be ok on the brake front.Today was a nice fall day so took a break from the engine to get some interior prep done.Vacuumed and washed a years dust off the floor and installed the dynamat.I also glued some new insulation up on the roof. The biggest thing is I finallt think I have the throttle linkage figured out.Unfortunely all the linkages had these mini springs on them and then the cotter pin but all my mini springs are long gone.So tomorrow off to the local parts store to see if I can find a generic spring kit and make my own for the missing ones.Anyways a few photos of the progress,i am looking forward to getting all the motor buttoned up and maybe, just maybe started before the really cool weather hits. That will give me the winter to get all the trims polished and installed and the interior back in.Speaking of trims the last pic will be off the trims that go under the rear doors on the rocker jutouts,if anybody out there runs into a decent set let me know,i would like to replace mine, also looking for the drivers side top grill bar.

A little more progress tonite, new sparkplugs in,most of the wiring figured out and loosely in place, generator mounted.I got the oil lines mostly tightened in,one small issue. There is the oil line that runs from the guage through the firewall and down the side of the motor.Mine is cracked in half,so need to find a replacement or figure out a way to fix this one.I think tomorrow night will be brale day,one more line to tighten up and then I can add some fluid and start bleeding the system.More pics soon.

Hey all Well a little more progress no thanks to an early visit from the flu bug.Anyways I think I have the throttlr linkage all done including msking new springs for all the rod ends and such.I got a ll the brake lines in and a good start on bleeding out the brakes.I put the generator in for the last time a bunch of other little things. So now onto the clutch linkage, fortuneltly I have a pic in the manual of how some of it goes but not sure exactly where the spring goes or which one.In my pics you will see I have 3 springs left, one for the clutch return I assume, one for the hood latch and not sure on the other.I did get the trans linkages attached not I am still not sure what position is neutral.I tried depressing the clutch and going through the gears but doesn't seem to want to shift into gears.Anyways could use some more pics help with the clutch linkage and trans levers I will post s

Hi Brian,

your work is great on this 49!

Something hit me, it's you or a previous owner that install a 2 barrels intake in this 49? 2 barrels appear first in 53.

Fitz.

I do not think that a two barrel was ever offered on an inline GM six until much latter.

Hey All
Thanks for the encouragement,it is coming along slowly.Kind of a pain at points as I received the car partially apart and so no pics or references as to how somethings go.I am lucky in that I have the 49 so a lot of the wiring and such can be figured out by comparison. My biggest issue is thatbthe 54 is an automatic and the 49 a 4 on the tree so a new learning curve as to how all the linkages, springs etc fit together. If I can get this clutch spring thing figured out I may only be a few days away from actually being able to start it.So far my best guess is one of those springs goes on the brake pedal and one on the clutch pedal, hard to tell for sure from the manual pics I have.Fitz you may be right on the manifold,i suspect this is a later motor period, warrenty replacement maybe as the engine number doesn't match with my gm history report.Heres the story on the car as far as I know it.When they built my local Canadian tire store they tore down an old farmstead. This car was parked inside one of the abandoned grain silos. They got it out, took it home and got it running and driving for the local car show in 1996.There is actually a dash plaque from the show on the dash. Then they took it home started to disassemble, repaint and powder coat a lot of the engine components. Also a bunch of new parts still in boxes in the car, like a rebuilt distributor, new fuel pump, new coil, new belt, carb looks to have been rebuilt.Anyways somewhere they lost interest and my friend ended up buying it for him and his wife to do.The marriage ended up going south and the car sat at his dads farm in a shed until I picked it up two years ago. What was supposed to be a simple get it running and drive turned into a complete paint job, motor repaint, new interior and just about every new part ecklers offers for this car.I am hoping to have it ready to drive by spring.

I must add in my statement before, «on flathead Pontiac engine». The 2 barrel carburator was even before 53 installed on inline 8 US Pontiac car. On our Canadian one, 53 was the year.

hey fitz,i now see what your talking about as I looked through my manual and noticed the carb is different from what should have been there in 49.The carb I installed is the one that was in the boxes of parts that came with the car, along with a new fuel filter assembly. It also explain why when I went to put the fuel line on the other day it doesn't fit anymore. The old carb would have had the port on the front corner and with the new carb it comes from the opposite side of the carb.Probably not a huge issue as I can just bend up a new line or maybe find one from a 54.Anyways got one spring figured out I think,it was for the brake pedal. Now i'm just not sure if there is even a spring on the lower clutch pedal, any three on the tree is probably the same configuration. As I mentioned I am not sure this is even the original motor, the serial is W235648 and that doesn't match the gm history docs.
