Full engine gasket set for 261 and other random Q's

Any brands to steer away from, or any that are much superior to the others?

Anyone near Edmonton recommend a decent machine shop? I'm wanting to bring the head in, 3 angle, install hardened seats etc.

Anyone get rid of the road draft tube and do a PVC set-up? If so, details?

Thinking of installing a remote oil filter set-up off an S-10 4.3L. Is there a better way to get rid of the canister filter?

Rene, i would like to share some 261 in liner info with you. The only advise on the gasket set is FELPRO. On the hardened valve seats it is a big NO. You do not need them, unless you are driving hard all the time and possibly hauling a heavy trailer or going up steep hills under load. The hard seats are a waste of money. On the PCV it is another NO, the only benefit would be if you are stuck in heavy traffic most of the time and only do city driving with little or no highway driving. On the oil filter it is another big NO, these older inline sixes do not like oil filters because they rob on average 3 to 4 PS.I. These motors need all the oil pressure they can get, so why rob them of any oil pressure at all. As long as you use a quality oil and change it regular that is what really matters. On my 261 i have the oil filter canister only for looks. If you need any more detailed information on these topics, please let me know. I hope this information helps in any way. Cheers. George

Just so I understand, you run the canister without any filter inside and change the oil frequently?

No, the canister is there with the lines but they are not hooked up into the engine block. It is only there for looks and is not tied into the oil galleries in any way. George

I agree with George, don't modify the valve seats. I have never done that in any of my old engines either, never an issue yet. Also, Felpro for gaskets, and if not, then Victor.

For gaskets you can try Al Lambert at Gasket City near Hamilton, ON
He has a website but I,m not near my business cards.

Wherever you get your gaskets from, check to make sure the head gaskets have the steam holes.

Rene, Dave has a good point. The 261 has steam holes in the head and block and the head gasket must allow the coolant to flow between the two. A 235 head gasket will fit but it has no steam holes and this will cause over heating. Cheers. George

I've got a rebuilt long shaft water pump for a 235/261 if you need one.  GM casting # 3736567, Amco part # 357.  $20 plus postage from Calgary.

I purchased a Felpro gasket set for a 261, part number FS7782B online from Amazon.ca. Was $59.29 Canadian including postage. I know prices change but that is a good deal.

Thanks Jake, I ended up purchasing through RockAuto.com

They have parts listings for Canadian specific parts, which I think is really cool and convenient. I recall paying about the same as you, and it got here in no time at all.

Now I just need to dial up the motivation and get back into the garage and working on the old girl!
