Engine Swap

Just looking to get some info on an engine swap I'll be doing on my 60 Strato Chief. I'll be replacing the inline six with a V8.

Will the bell housing from the six fit a V8? Will I have to change the clutch linkage?

I won't be doing this swap until this next fall, so I have a few months to plan and gather parts if needed.

I have a 1975 Monte Carlo that is not selling so it will be donating alot of parts to the Chief.

The bell housing is different, along with the flywheel

I "think" the clutch linkage will work.

Accel linkage on firewall is different, engine mounts, frame brackets..

Early 3 speed trans are very weak if you're keeping it original.

Thanks

Randy

Thanks Randy,
Much appriciated. With the info you gave me, I think I will be going with the V8 and auto tranny out of the Monte.
Thanks
Colin

I think that's the best plan, use everything possible from the Monte.

Engine/trans with yoke, complete with starter, alt, all brackets, maybe even exhaust manifolds.

Trans mounts correctly. Possibly even the Monte engine frame mounts and clamshells, and power steering box.

Nice smooth, powerful, quiet swap!!

Thanks
Randy

Randy,
I really appreciate the advice. I will be using as much of the Monte as possible. The 454 turbo 400 combo should move the Chief along just fine. The Monte is a fully loaded car,so there are some goodies I'll be taking to install on the Chief as well. The Chief has standard brakes and no power steering.
P.S. I'm really shocked the numbers matching big block Monte didn't sell. Was asking $1500 for it and at that I was basically giving it away. I had rebuilt the tranny and radiator and installed new master brake cylinder and rear brake cylinders. Just as well now that I found my 60's car I wanted. It's going to be an interesting project swapping what I can to the Chief.

Really good thing you are ditching the 3 speed!!

Sounds even better now!!!

Thanks
Randy

That will be a nice ride when your done. Hard to believe that someone didnt buy a 454 Monte for $1500 eh? I think you should be estatic about that!

Agreed, that's a deal. To have every last nut, bolt, bracket, pulley etc to do a 454/TH400 swap is easily worth that.

You will have to cut the front driveshaft and have it rebalanced. You may have to get a different power brake booster to fit the BB in there. Radiator will need an upgrade, not sure what fan shroud you'd use. Water pump length- need a short one (not sure if BBs have long and short WP's like later/early SBCs).

To use the column shift linkage, you'd likely have to change out the steering columns, might be easier to use a floor shift?

Lots of people have done the BB swap, should be easy to do and work pretty good in your 60.
