In 1974 or '75 my brother want to buy a good used car. He was in the Air Force and makes enough money to have a ''muscle car''. I bring him to a use car dealer......he give us the keys and we both road test a blue 1972 Trans Am, 455, 4 speeds.........but I fail to make him buy the car.............he buy a 1972 Mach 1, 351 Cleveland, 4 speeds instead.........he later tell me that the road test of the Trans Am scare him to death..........
If fact, he couldn't handle the Trans Am nor the Mach 1 ..........I was riding with him when he totaled the Mach 1 the evening before my 28 th birthday.........needless to say he never have a ''muscle car'' after that.......Ohh..... and I bought the remain of the Mach 1 from the insurance company to put the drive train in my 1956 Ford coach........but that's an another story!
One often hears about 1970-1/2 Camaro's, as the 1969's were built until about January 1970, but one rarely hears about 1970-1/2 Firebirds. As Firebirds were built in the same plants as Camaro's, am I safe to assume the 1969 Firebirds were also built until January 1970, then the 1970 model years were built? Don's article refers to the 1970-1/2 Trans Am's.
Yes Clint, The 1970 Camaro / Firebird was an all-new car and bore no resemblance to the 1967 to 1969 models. Production delays as GM sorted out engineering and factory tooling issues forced the automaker to extend the production run of the 1969 Camaro / Firebird to December 1969 and release the 1970 models on February 26, 1970. This was halfway through the regular model-year production run. GM never identified the 1970 model as anything other than 1970, but some owners prefer to call them 1970 1/2. 1969 Models were offered up until that time and Sales brochures never even referred to them as either 69 or 70 models.
