Diabetes ? Not You ? and then, you can't see.

The Public Service Announcements run so frequently on TV you don't even pay attention.

You know,

Do you have,

Unusual thirst ?

Frequent urination ?

Weight change (gain or loss) ?

Extreme fatigue or lack of energy ?

Blurred vision Frequent or recurring infections?

Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal ?

Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet ?

And how about those risk factors for men such as,

Having a parent, brother, or sister with diabetes;

Having health complications that are associated with diabetes;

Having high cholesterol or other fats in the blood;

Being overweight, especially if that weight is mostly carried around the tummy;

OK, I don't smoke, I don't drink and I thought I was eating well.

My Mother and Aunt have Diabetes but they are over 75 years old.

So I must be fine,

Wrong as usual !

I have been very tired for months but that must just be my work schedule.

I pee a lot, must be an infection.

In December my vision started to blur and during the Christmas Holidays, I could not drive at night.

I just had a Eye Checkup in early December and I was told "No signs of Diabetes"

I drive 20 people to work every day and drive a forklift at work, my eyes are my life.

The first two days in January I tried to work with borrowed glasses, not a good plan.

Tuesday night I went to get my new glasses and found that my eyes were changing very fast.

Hours later I was at Emergency.

I spent 12 hours there with most of the time in the waiting room with quite a collection people

Your blood sugar reading should be below 7.1, mine was at 24 !

My last physical blood work was all good.

Sugar that high can actually change the shape of your eyes.

The reason I was told "No signs of Diabetes" from the eye doctor was that he was looking for permanent Diabetes damage.

The good part is that I left the hospital diagnosed and on prescription medication.

Since then I have been through the ringer of health care professionals and had the word "carbohydrates" driven down my throat.

Pasta, Chips, Pop with sugar and everything else I liked now banned !

I'm now testing in the normal range as I responded to the meds well.

My eyesight is slowly returning to normal  but I am very lucky as diabetes is the number one cause of blindness.

The point of all this you just read is that undiagnosed diabetes can do real damage to us and a lot of us don't think we could have it

Could this be you ?

Two months ago, I would have just scrolled through a post like this and went on to the latest Carl/Johnnee battle biggrin

Think about it.

A good warning Randy. I had a scare a few years ago when my count was high on a test but on the retest it was fine. However, at 58 I now go for a physical every 2 years and at 60 will likely start to go every year.

I do pee a lot though but I tend to drink a lot of water the days I'm at work too.

Johnnee's no battle at all for me.....

One of the techs at work had a similar scare. Actually he blacked out at work and had bad pains in his head. The ambulance came and rushed him to hospital. Turns out he had diabetes and a clogged artery in his neck! He's doing better but is also on a strict diet and medication. While I don't drink junk like pop I do have a weakness for my wife's baking. I was feeling really crappy lately (especially over Christmas) and have since cut out carbohydrates. I was getting a headache every day thanks to sugar withdrawl. Now it's down to about twice a week.

I have a Mom with type 2 diabetes. She has not obeyed the diet orders and has gone down hill steadily for the last 20 years. Is in full care now with on set dimentia. I also have had 3 drivers in the last year get diagnosed, two of those were hospitalized for 2 weeks to stabilize. The last guy had blurred vision, terrible sleep issues due to peeing continually. Midday brain fog, extreme fatigue and naps continually. The first guy went in for a checkup and his blood was at 42. He is lucky to be alive. Pay attention guys to all the symptoms listed and DO WHAT THEY SAY if you get diagnosed !! IF not diagnosed, stay off the sugar drinks, sugar period is a poison !

Good news.....

My dad was diabetic   he was still smoking, the moment he died, and was 315 lbs and on enough drugs, to knock down a horse...

Last year I passes his death age (66) and still struggle with weight

but I go to Doctor 1-2 times a year for blood and EKG...   never smoked or drank (not a drop)     This year I will start using Lucas to prolong my engine life..
