RE: February 2016 Feature Car

This car is amazing and beautiful but does anyone know if this car is an actual 409/four speed car that is documented. Another question i have is about the chrome on the engine, is this factory original. The master cylinder has chrome as well ?? Sweet looking car for sure but is it REAL. Cheers. George

Re: 63 Parisienne 409

With so few produced, and with so many years and natural attrition, it is so nice to hear of one that made it and was restored back to stock.

A nice torquey 409 340-horse, probably a T-10, no Custom Sport since they didnt exist for 1963 but buckets & console instead. I didnt see power steering or power brakes checked off; one would have to refrain from any squirrelly driving on the street because if you lost it you would not bring it back. What a nice machine that can be driven and enjoyed for the mechanical delight and simplicity in it. It was the first year for both the 4-speed transmission & also for the 409 in the Canadian cars (Pontiacs and perhaps Canadian made Chevrolets, who knows?) Talk about low key, the V8 badges on the fenders usually warned all takers of a mild 283 under the hood. And yes George, the chrome under the hood is standard on all passenger car 409s from 1963 through 1965. The master cylinder cover looks like it is just bright zinc dichromate plating like stock.

I don't know the history on the Cdn 409's, but that is the correct single snorkle chrome air cleaner and Canadian Pontiac 409 valve covers had no Chevy Bowtie of course, so pretty rare. In US Chevies, there was a mid year changeover from a T10 to the Muncie M20. Not sure if that tach is correct, it could be, have never seen one in a Cdn Pontiac. The 63 Chevy, it was built into the dash directly in front of the driver.

In US Chevies, the 409 came out in late 61 but extremely rare, lots of them in 62, those years were all solid lifters in the cars. 63 was the first year for the 340HP 409.

As was said, that is likely zinc chromate on the MC, not chrome.

And I disagree, PB & PS are not necessary when a car gets squirrelly. PS is real handy when going slow though.

WOW, a big block and a 4 speed, don't get no better than that.  Pontiac sure knew the horse power game back in the day!  Be proud of your beauty, she's awesome!

Here are the documents relating to the initial purchase of this Pontiac. The first two pages are documentation directly from GM in Oshawa but the last two pages are from the dealership in Quebec and are all in French.

Thanks Jean, I must stop off in St Georges de Beauce some time. Is there a big car show there in early Sept? I was at a show in that area once back about 2000.

Don,

Yes there used to be a relatively large one day car show until about three years ago. The organizers lost the use of the closed down small airport and have not had the show for the last three years. There is a car show on a small island in Beauceville, about 10 miles north of Saint-Georges, toward Quebec City. Usually about 200 cars show up but never been to it myself.

Is this the Holy Grail of the Pontiac faithful or what? The car is beautiful and the mechanical's are what make us dream. Let aside the fact that the car was born like this. Boy I would really liked to have been able to do a 409 for my post.

Congratulations on the FEATURE and us getting to see it.

In regard to the Tach, I had pictures of a 63 Pontiac sitting in a field, partially dismantled. It is/was a bucket seat , console car. On the upper left side side of the dash was the Pontiac Tack. I did contact the owner, but was unable to buy the tack, and did not want to buy the whole car and leave it sitting there. I  know it would be incredibly rare but odds are it could be a factory install. I don't have enough backround knowledge or history to be sure.

I since saw a US Pontiac dash for sale (sold) which was identical to this one, including the tach.
