 Growing up in the mid 60's I remember my father (tool & die maker) working in the Detroit area,

quitting one shop and going to another because he got 25 cents an hour more....

he worked 14 shops in two years and ended up at GM Fisher Body Fort Street Plant 21 for 28 years.

I also remember these shops never harboured any ill feelings against those quitting,because

the shortage of skilled workers was such that they could have these workers come back and work for them again.

Signs outside every shop listed the workers they needed,and getting a job was just a matter of going inside,applying  and hearing "when can you start?"

Lots of overtime in those days and incentives like free catered lunches on overtime Saturday and Sunday.

 

The workers in all these small shops then were involved in the building of the cars we treasure today. 

Fisher Body Plant 21 .......closed officially on Friday June 16th 1989, built in 1919.
