stainless steel exaust

i would like to get a stainless steel dual exaust custom built fir my car

i have called a couple if shops arround in my area

and they answered they dont do stainless steel exausts

i hear stainless  steel can not be bent ,it  is welded instead of beeing bent at the angles

is this true? i have noticed pics of stainless exausts with welds but i dont recall seeind bent

stainless pipes

i guess i will have to go with regular pipe i dont really like the looks of welds on stainless pipes

what would be the ideal diameter for a warmed up 283 ?? 21/4 2  1/2 inch??

thanks

2 contacts below - I've used both these guys / 2.25" stainless steel is probably the max. diameter, for hydraulic pipe bender.

a) L&N Stainless Exhaust - all pipes bent out of stainless steel in-house and S/S mufflers used.

Great guys, nice custom work & they don't overcharge

^^ It was probably 12-15 years ago, I used L & N (on 2 trucks) / place was hard to find without GPS - garage behind house, out in the country.

- their stainless steel muffler install, was only $15 more than Midas aluminized crap / L & N never had a warranty claim, in 12-13 years of business, at the time

- the muffler install on my 5.0L-v8 Chev 4x4 pickup, probably added an honest 20 HP / first paved road I found, squealed the rear tires, for once

b) The other S/S muffler & pipe place I use and is closer to me / workmanship & pipes, turn out perfect.

Have you checked on-line? I thought I saw mandrel bent SS kits at Summit or Jegs, complete with pipes, mufflers, crossover etc.
Worth checking prices anyway so you'll know if local guys are reasonable. Coming in from US is likely USD x2 = CAD with exchange, shipping etc.

"Jim Cox Custom Exhaust"

Now there is a name from the past.

I did not know he was still working.

I picked him up outside of Grand Bend in the Summer of 1984.

His girlfriend's Chevelle ran out of gas and I picked them up in my Grande Parisienne.

Took them to London to get gas and back to get the Chevelle

Then he hosted us to a steak barbeque back in London.

Got my date home at 5am.

Top notch guy.

I still have the gas can he had to buy biggrin

the thing is i dont want the orig exaust layout that goes with tail pipes that go behind the back wheels

i would like the tail pipes coming in front the back wheels

Pypes or Flowmaster would have a bolt on kit for a 67. I've used regular steel, I painted it with high heat cast iron, repainted it often... my car used to get driven a lot, but you could eat off the undercarriage.

I was more ambitious when I was a teen, I replaced every bolt underneath every few weeks with fresh plated bolts....

Carl ^^ Your pipes may have a higher nickel content (much like OEM) / different from the franchise junk, aluminized pipes even worse.

 - once the original equipped exhaust is cut off / many common muffler shop replacements, are a bad deal

The franchise muffler shops can even screw up an install easy enough / don't even care if the drive shaft, spins a hole in the side of a pipe.

- enough reason for me to use S/S, independant installers usually know what their doing

25 years ago, I bought a 78 Chev pickup, 3/4T and put a trip permit on it.

- replaced muffler & tailpipe, at Midas

- drove truck up North, parked in farm garage for 6 months, on cement floor

- when I started to redo the frame/cab mounts, the 1/2 year old new muffler already had a hole in it

20 years ago, another Midas muffler and tailpipe / this time due to daily driving, tail pipe rotted off in 14 months time

- shop manager said, their pipes were designed to last 18 months / what a con job

^^ Gone Stainless Steel Exhaust ever since.

Randy ^^ Nice karma / great story.

I remember Jim Cox from his original days at Midas London, on Florence St. / he was always a craftsman.

- he always did my exhaust and even put cargo coils in my daily driver / 6 cyl 1967 Beaumont, to stop rear from sagging

VHT offers a high temp satin clear. I've used vht for many years on exhaust, headers and engines and have been happy with the results.
