The Gardiner was already badly deteriorated in 1982, my first year in Toronto.
It is going to be a MAJOR challenge (and a ton of cash) for Toronto to replace it in the future.

The Gardiner is something i always avoid during its peak usage times. It makes more sense to just take the secondary roads to get into and across Toronto. I cut my travel time in half, usually by doing this.

I completely disagree. Its a good route, a lot of cars but it moves better than the city streets. Same for Don Valley Parkway which I use everyday to go to work. If this is ever taken down we are soooo screwed.
It will be standing far longer than any of us could ever live, even in our wildest dreams. Yea i know, it is Toronto, so lets slag her any way we can. Slaging Toronto is a Canadian pastime that i have always enjoyed. Being born and raised there, i can say that i totally get it. Cheers. George

Ray,i am only speaking of my own personal experience. If you have to do it during the typical "RUSH" peak times it is total insanity. I have found that doing the back secondary roads is way way way better. If someone wants to sit in their car and look at the rear of other cars at a crawl, well that is their business in the Gardiner crawl.

In the top vintage picture (Gardiner looking eastbound at the Humber) I recall when the pilings for the expressway at the Humber (at the end of the straightaway in the picture where the Seaway Motel is) settled and sank down so the roadway now had a Humber Hump. I can remember unwittingly catching air at the hump in my friend's Capri II around 1980.
