August 2016 Feature Car

Clint Scherger is one of our veteran members having been on board since 2008. He is well known on Canadian Poncho for being the "go to guy" if you need any type of information on 1970 full size Canadian built Pontiac's. The reason for this is Clint has a fleet of these cars and two of his great 70's have already been featured in the past. I am now proud to feature Clint's beautiful 2+2. Which one is your favorite? Clint tells us more:

As some may know, what got me started in these cars was my parents 70 454 Parisienne which became mine in 1979.  I had the car until it was scrapped in 1994, but kept the engine.   While this 2+2 may not be what got me started, it's what revived my interest.  Here's its story:

My 1970 Pontiac 2+2 Hardtop was originally purchased by Jerry Baranowski on March 11, 1970 from Calgary Motor Products in Calgary, Alberta.  CMP was still in their downtown location, where Fifth Avenue Place presently sits.  This purchase date is confirmed by the Protect-O-Plate and Warranty Card.

Jerry owned the car until I purchased it in May 1999, after looking at it a few times, and lengthy negotiations with Jerry.  The odometer showed 21135 original miles when I purchased it, and still sported the original Uniroyal twin stripe bias ply tires.  The car had been painted in about 1994, and had the proper ’70 2+2 stripes reapplied.  When asked why the car had such low mileage, Jerry indicated he has always had 2-3 cars, and just didn’t drive that one much.

The interior was in very nice condition, and included the paper CMP floor mat covers used by the service department.  Literature provided with the car included a 1970 Canadian Pontiac Brochure which features the 2+2, and a CMP New Vehicle Maintenance Card.  Other items of interest were the small envelope containing the original key code punch-outs, and the Calgary Motor Products key holder in the shape of a gun holster.

The Uniroyal tires were replaced in 2000 with radial T/A’s, making it a dream to drive.  The twin stripes are still mounted on their Ralley wheels, and can be used for shows.

In 2000, the car was driven to the POCI Pontiac Nationals in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and in 2001 to the POCI Pontiac Nationals in Red Wing, Minnesota, placing 3rd in the 2+2 class.

This numbers matching car is solid and rust free, and is a fine example of a Canadian Pontiac.  I have added popular options including AM/FM Stereo, 8 Track Player, Courtesy Lights, Power Trunk Release, Map Light and Dual Exhaust.

With such low mileage, it is still like driving a new car.  Everything is tight and responsive.  Everything works like new, and it always gets a few looks.

I was surprised about a dozen years ago to learn it was featured in John Smith's "High-Performance Pontiacs: 1955 - 1974".  They sneaked a photo at the parking lot of the POCI Grand Rapids banquet, I had my T4-16-18 front plate on the car, not my car-show only HA-19-70 plates.

With the addition of my convertible in 2001, I haven't driven the hardtop much in years.  It still only shows appx 39,000 miles on the odometer.

What a beautiful 1970 Pontiac time machine. I have to admit, it is probably the best looking 70 Poncho i have ever seen in my life. Any information on the small block engine. Cheers. George

Thanks for the great comments gang, it really is like driving a new car.   Shortly after I got it I had the rad power flushed, and a couple of the original tower clamps were removed.  I put all new hoses on it at that time, but should go back to the 4 rib hoses and tower clamps one of these days.

The engine is the 300 hp L48 350 4bbl, backed by a turbo 350 and 2.73 gears.  It easily cruises at 80+ mph on the US Interstate highways.   The L48 is almost standard 70 2+2 equipment, as I've only seen one 250 hp 2 bbl, and there handfulls of the 265 hp LF6 400 2bbl, 345 hp LS4 454 and 390 hp LS5 454 produced.

Everyone likes my yellow convertible, but when they see this car they say it's even nicer.  I hope so, it's got about 80,000 fewer miles.

Years ago I parted out a 2 barrel 70 2+2. I always found it interesting that it was a sporty car, buckets, console, disc brakes with small centre rally wheels, 12 bolt posi but a 2 barrel. It seemed kind of tame!

46 years old and still a new car, that in itself is so rare. Nice car, congrats on the monthly car honour.

Beautiful car. I drove a 70 2t2 350-300 turbo 350 12 bolt 2:73 until 1983 when the frame broke. My wife called the car the Pickel because it was a dark green colour and she felt it had the shape of a Bick,s pickel. That is the car she had the most fun with as I did not care about the body because I knew it was pretty rusty and the 350 300 was bullet proof. When the frame broke I kept the engine and parted the rest of it out with most parts sold at the Barrie flea market. The Pontiac was a great highway car and even more fun doing 360's in the winter in the malls parking lot on Sundays when they were closed. My son was 4 years old and he was always bugging me to take him and a friend to the mall and play with the Pickel.

The feature car is the nicest 70 2t2 I have ever seen. Love the originality and all the dealer items.

Congratulations Clint.
