Driveline rattle

On my 69 Parisienne I get chain like rattle from under the car or a sound similar to some nuts and bolts in a can being rolled, maybe a little higher pitched. After driving down an empty road with a friend we both took a turns hanging out the passenger door to hear where the noise is coming from. It seems that the noise is coming from the trans, drive shaft area.

We removed the drive shaft and found a bad front u-joint and changed both out for good measure. The noise is still there.

The noise is present on acceleration only. No sound in reverse, coasting, braking or even when bringing the engine up against the torque converter to do a brake torque.

Any suggestions or previous similar experience.

Just a shot in the dark, but I had a pinion yoke collar break free from the yoke years back. Drove me nuts looking for the rattle! Block tires, jack er up,put e brake on a bit and have buddy hit the throtle?

Could be a silly thought because I know you say it's not in the front, but maybe a broken bolt on the sway bar link?

The other thought is something to do with transmission mounting or crossmember hardware?

How old is your exhaust? A baffle that lets go in a muffler will not necessarily rattle all the time. Or even the pipe hitting the frame.

Had a similar rattle. It took a while to find it, but I got it. I have a spring under the car connected to the e-brake cable to hold it tight. The spring was missing, so during idle there was no rattle and in forward moving slow with your ear to the ground there was no rattle and same in reverse when moving slow - nothing. Put in a new spring and rattle was gone.

Good luck.

I've been quiet busy as of late and haven't had a chance to get under the Parisienne. I like all the suggestions and actually hope to get under the car this weekend.

Thanks for all the comments.

This is a good shot in the dark Jim!

I've also run across this in the past.

Had it on a lift at a muffler shop looking for the noise and happened to flick the collar by accident.

Thanks

Randy
