It sounds like you are describing the hexagonal block-off plates. They would actually be correct for a 63-65 Acadian though they would fit through 67, plus they would only fit a 64 Beaumont as the 65s used  rectangular plate (shared with the 65 Chevelle).

It sounds like you have the style pictured below:
