Good stuff Vince. I've been on the rock before for a couple weeks, and I always say, "if I didn't live on PEI, I'd live in Newfoundland.

Did they check for any of that prairie dirt under the car before you were allowed in?biggrin

I added up the totals and got 17.6 US MPG and 21.1 IMP MPG. Those are better than stock numbers I would think.

My 69 LeMans does about 14 US in town short trips and 18 US on road trips but that is with a 350 Pontiac 4bbl in a lighter car (3,900 pounds and 2.56 gears). My bonneville with a 428 and 3.42 gears (but with tall over 29" tires) and probably weighing 4,500 lbs does 2-3 US MPG worse.

I would think that wagon weighs 4,800 pounds or more. I think your overdrive netted you a good 2-3 MPG on your trip.

Morning all! Wasn't much to report on the start of day 5... Crossing was smooth but the food and drink prices were rough! The price on a bottle of apple juice was just over $3... I guess, what else are you going to drink! But we all had our own stash of food and treats when we went top side from the car deck... Tough to get a constant sleep on the air seats and one was constantly moving to adjust your position... walked around the upper decks to get some fresh air and to stretch... Ahhh, the cool, damp and salty east coast air!

Coming near the Island, we caught a distant view of the Burin Peninsula and we finally got cell service again... we were getting close... I walked down to the restaurant with my 2 newfound friends as they wanted their morning coffee.... then came the announcement, 1/2 to get ready for departure.... It turned out to be a beauty of a morning and the blue Newfoundland sky was a welcomed sight!

As we came in the narrows to Argentia, it really cleared up... Talked to my 2 shipmates and learned that Al was in one of the later wars so I found it quite interesting to hear of his adventures! Even though he never saw time, his life aboard the ship was an ear full! As we were about to dock, we all chatted to make future plans to hook up as the other gent had bought property just 25 minutes from my home town....

Now you know why I went the700R4 route! Any bit helps and the lower 1st gear does help her get more motivation of the line... I'm sure a set of 3:08 will help her breath a little better on the highway as well... We shall see...

A friend of mine on PEI got held up at the terminal while they pressure-washed his ATV. No foreign dirt allowed in NFLD. That bright, red mud ...

HI Vince

When I did the calculation for the mileage I used the web site Squack fox, you just enter in the amounts and it does the rest. Not sure as to what they use as a conversion.

Just a short bit of history on the Mint green Safari. Initially the car was sold to me described as a "parts car" for one I've had here for quite a few years. Was missing some big block related parts, bracketry and bolts and such including the air cleaner bowl but the lid was left thank goodness, missing parts must have been needed for a chev. The dipstick showed full to the top of the tube with a creamy tan colored substance which I assumed meant a cracked block or something. Had a mishmosh of different spark plugs in it and a jumble of all kinds of plug wires. Decided to see if it would run for the heck of it and hindsight being what it is , isn't it lucky I did. Really makes one wonder why it was put out to pasture in the first place as it is quite evident there was a lot of life left in her for sure! Definately not a parts car. I owned it for three or four years then sold it to Vince comforted by the fact that it was going to some one who wanted "the whole car" and the fact that I still have my project Safari though I've been looking for a donor rear quarter panel for many years. Vince convinced me to get a build sheet for my car even though it isn't running. The search goes on. 1970 gold safari estate 002.JPG1970 gold safari estate 001.JPG

Vince, how would you describe the driving experience? I'm sure most of us have a good sense of what that era Pontiacs drive like in general but I'm curious about the wagon effect. I have a 69 American wagon but I've never really driven it. I guess there is more noise inside compared to a regular 2 or 4 door sedan? Handling wise does that extra weight in back help or hinder stability at highways speeds?

Great travel diary Vince. Certainly shows how reliable these old cars really are. And kudos to Cheviac for saving the car when he had it.

It was over all great! Typical wind noise from the original dried out door and window seals... no real difference from a comparable 2 or 4-dr.. I believe the rear sway bar along with the springs and shocks helped greatly... Cracking the rear window an inch or so, doesn't create much wind noise but it sure pulls the air from the floor and dash vents on the highway! The only thing she liked to do was to follow the ruts in the road created by general traffic and tractor trailers... especially during lane changes! She would pull the wheel.... I LOVE driving it, really!

To continue... on to the boat deck, chat to some of the deck hands, ask the older guys if they knew my Dad and finally depart...

WELCOME TO NEWFOUNDLAND/LABRADOR... Funny thing is and I never realized till now, there is no actual welcome sign! How odd... Off the boat, phone in hand, another little video of the surrounding area and the old American Base, Argentia! I added some links to show some of you history buffs the importance it played in WW2...

Travel to the next community of Placentia to visit my pals Paul's Mom and the first thing she said to me when she saw the car? You made it in that old jalopy! LOLOL.... I, with tongue in cheek, said, was there any doubt? hmmhmm  She then proceeded to ask that age old question, the one I have my spiel down to a science waiting in reply with, when are you going to paint it! (haha) Spent an hour there and then the final hour to reach my goal, destination, Brigus, Conception Bay!

Estate Day 5 Placentia Bridge Sept1-1, 2016.PNG

Heading out over the Argentia Access Road towards the TCH and then connecting to the Veterans Highway and on to Brigus, I snapped this pic to signify that my vacation from this point on, has begun...

The 3 and 1/2 days starting from the Plains of the Prairies, to the hilly northern and at times isolated roads of Northern Ontario, past the Nations Capital, through the Tunnel of Quebec walking alongside the Fleuve St. Laurent, towards the winding roads of New Brunswick finally seeking the boat that was awaiting on the easterd coast of Nova Scotia.... we made it!  Relaxed after 15 hours on the high seas, let the 3 weeks of visiting, relaxing and the Estates unveiling, begin....

Should have run straight pipes on the way home. My brother did that from Alberta to PEI in the 70's on a 650 Yamaha, a couple of times.

What a great trip! Thank you for sharing.

As a kid we as a family drove coast to coast across the country and also all over the U.S. In 1970 we drove all the way to Vancouver Island from Ontario, putting about 7000+ miles on our new 1970 Biscayne. In 1971 we drove to Newfoundland, taking the ferry from (I believe) Glace Bay, N.S. Again it was done in the 70 Biscayne.  I remember them blasting our car, boat and trailer with essentially a fire hose. They didn't want the potato bug moving in.  Hey, on the way through Quebec I even saw 1 of the 11 Hemicudas that were sold in Canada in 1971 as a new car (Sassygrass Green with black billboards, it is still around).

I remember a few 1970 Pontiac Safari wagons around back in the day, and I even rode in a friend's parent's Verdoro Green one. Today they are almost extinct.

Yes, the 650 twins had a distinctive sound, almost like a Triumph. Was your brother's bike a 650 Special? They were considered cool cruiser bikes. I found them quite comfortable around town but on the highway I wanted to ride something with a sportier riding position.

Clint, I had to recheck the axle ratios after you above comment clicked in... I re-checked the chart, and I do not see a 2:21 listed... are you sure?

I seem to remember seeing the 2.21's listed in the Chevy Impala documentation that's provided by Oshawa with our build sheets.  I don't know if you've ever met Big John, but he's the size of a mountain, and if he says he's got 2.21's I'm not going to argue with him.  His is a fully loaded car with automatic a/c and the cloth interior.  I don't think he drives it much anymore, it's in need of a restoration.

I do remember a very tall 2.29:1 rear gearset offered for the mild cammed (LS1) 427 & (LS4) 454 for 69/70 in the Big cars. It was not 2.21 but rather 2.29.

Thanks, I found the 2.29's listed in my 70 Cdn Pontiac info as well:

perhaps the 2.29 was a dealer only ratio. American Pontiacs had a few ratios that were not available from the factory but were available from Pontiac for deal install.

And an 8.625 axle to boot...  Would love to see the pumpkin cover and number of bolts that one would have!
