Here's a news story out of Timmins, ON where a modern SUV rear ended a 1950 Packard

You have to wonder about the IIHS crash test done in 2009...1959 Chevrolet vs 2009 Malibu

The 59 got destroyed..............maybe the trick is for an old car to remain stationery during a crash?

Or leave the engine in the old car.

A good friend's old brother used to own a 1957 Pontiac Laurentian sedan. Around 1979 he was in a multi-car accident in Wisconsin. He ended up with a tiny dent the size of an egg, the car that hit him was destroyed and couldn't even roll on it's own wheels.

There is some merit in a car progressively absorbing energy in a collision by sacrificing itself, but I have to say that the old Pontiac went through several more owners and is probably still around, as is the driver.

My mom even told me about a time that her father rolled his car (was it his 53 Caddy?) and landed back on it's wheels and he kept on driving. He was wearing a bowler hat at the time; after the roll and go maneuver his hat was still on his head, but dented. laughing.gif

Looks to me as if the Nissan hit the trailer, not the Packard.

The 50 Packard belongs to my brother. The car was loaded on the trailor ready to be taken to florida for the winter. The packard and trailor were pushed more than 20 feet from the impact from the nissan. The car was driven by a lady whose husband owns the Nissan dealership. The car in front of her stopped for a red light and she was not paying attention and hit the trailor and packard instead of the car in front of her. There are no brake skid marks and it appears she hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal. The tow straps snapped from the hit ,the trailor is damaged in the rear and the front cowling braces are bent. We have not checked it out completely yet and are hoping the frame is not bent. The packard is damaged a lot more than the pictures show. The right rear quarter panel is buckled and the side doors will not open. Even though the car looks rusty, it is just surface rust from being sun burnt, the car is solid and runs and drives beautifully.

The lady driving the Nissan was taken to hospital for precautionary measures. All the air bags went off and a window had to be broken to get in the car to get her out.All the doors were locked. The funniest thing is her husband was following her in the car behind and saw it all happen. She had just left the hairdresser and was probably looking at herself in the rear view mirror checking out her hairdo.

Now my brother has to wait to hear from the insurance adjuster to see what they want to do with the packard and where we have to bring the trailor for a damage estimate and repair.

Thanks, Al. Knew you'd have the inside story.

Just a question....with ABS would there have been skid marks?
