Pinion preload woes

I have a 8.2 posi. It needed the front bearing and race ( yoke side ). So as I was installing the axle back in the car..the pinion became loose, but before it was tight? So bought a new crush Slevel. Why was it tight , them it became loose when it just slid off the floor jack while moving it to the car to put back In? The back lash is 0.007, the same carrier and pinion that came in went back in. Bearings wear good, just the front was pitted from sitting. Any suggestions? Thanks.

When you say it was tight, do you mean can't turn tight or preload tight? Can't turn tight would mean the pinion wasn't centred in the inner bearing when you tightened the nut. If you had preload tight then loose, I'd say the bearing race wasn't pounded in all the way. Once the jar of coming off the jack, everything centred or bearing seated and was then loose. You may or may not have needed a new crush sleeve but its ok changing it with the new bearing anyhow.

Hows the carrier bearings? Can you move the carrier side to side with a pry bar? When you say loose/tight do you mean play or effort to rotate? As JC said if your carrier is tight would think crush sleeve.

I think that's the only explanation

The race wasn't  seated . It wasn't much play  , just enough to boggle the brain.

So used to working  on heavy trucks...didn't make sense,  but now it does.

Thanks guys..

By the way, gorgeous ponchos...

I was looking at a 63 convertible . ...over under head lites ?

How do you put up a pic?

Also have to put a speedy sleeve on the yoke.

Always a reason for something.
