Hello everyone, does anyone know if the odometer and speedometer on my Canadian 1960 laurentian wagon is in kilometers or miles? reason im asking is because the speedometer its rated to top speed of 120 which looks just like my us built 1960 pontiac ventura. any input will be appreciated, thanks.
Unless the car was originally intended for export from Canada it will be in miles per hour. 120 was the top number on many dials.
Canadian cars didn't switch over to metric ( kilometers per hour ) until the mid 1970s. I'm thinking 1976.
thanks, so if i understand correctly my speedometer is in miles per hour(car was just recently exported to us within the last 40 days) since it was built in 59 or 60?
Any how many clusters have we seen with some sort of ugly KMH converstion sticker placed on them? A local radio station (CFPL London) was giving them away when the metric system started. Dad put them on the cluster in the Strato Chief...
I am surprised, unless I missed it, that no mentioned the cluster on Tine's (Freulein TinTin) car... It is the first one I have seen that old.. Is the odometer in kms as well?
When I was doing the restro on my 'vert in '95, I looked up and tried to get a km speedo from GM and at that time, it wasn't discontinued, or "NLA" as we are all familiar with... BUT, it never did arrive....
and don't forget about those NASTy little things they sold... (kiloverters?)......that went in between your transmission and speedo cable...that made your speedo read in kilograms.....and REALLY cranked up the #'s on the oddometer

That is the MPH top end of the rare 1957 Super Power Pack engine, prototype 389 cubic inches, in limited COPO Pontiacs. They came with special Bonneville-rated tires to match the 200mph speed. These were the cars that the Autobahn was built for.

(just kidding!)

My brother's always used to joke about those automatics. They said they would try to convince guys who didn't know better to pull it down into "R" for race!

As explained above most of the mid to late 70s had both scales on the speedometer. Whichever scale was in larger print would have determined the units of the odometer.

Everything would have been in kilometers. Go back to the second post in this thread where I said " unless it was built for export "

Yes I did see your post Ted (and of course you are right, I was just goofing), plus it is easy to figure out that the middle 100 on her gauge must be kph since it approximates 60 mph on North American cars of that vintage (e.g. mine) but now I am thinking I would REALLY like to get an export speedo for 55-56 Pontiac, that would be GREAT in my BBC 56, I'd get a cable (which needs replacement anyway) and trans gear made to match the 200 mph top end, eh?

I still had one of these in its original packaging and sold it to a member here a few years ago.
