Its quite a shock to transition into retirement even if its your choice. The most useful piece of advice I heard a couple of years before I left my outfit was, "You might love your job but it doesn't love you." Once I realized how true that was I didn't invest quite as much of myself as I had even though I certainly tried to still earn my pay.
I was lucky in that I had developed skills that were marketable and a habit of dependability (which is always in demand) both of which I'm sure you have and will go a long ways.
I think that is why my feelings are hurt , I've always stood up for my team. I don't feel anyone did the same for me. but I really don't know the whole story , and was so shocked at that moment .. I was speechless....
To infinity and beyond !

Well that's just a slap in the face. Sorry to read that.
You'll have some time to get projects finished, have the house cleaned and supper on the table for your great wife. I can just see you with a Banda on and a flower print apron whipping up some cup cakes........
Rog, I had this happen to me twice, the first time was the hardest, even though I saw it coming as the business was slowly dying. You sound like mentally you are handling it well, keep doing that.
In my business, one month of pay per year of service was a "normal" severance. In your industry, mining, it may be different, but I would find a labour lawyer who is familiar with your industry and see what is "normal" for your industry. 6 months may be fine and I certainly would not recommend a legal battle.
To find a lawyer, ask some people you know, who have had this sort of thing happen, to recommend a labour lawyer they have used.
When I did this, the lawyer got the company to pay his bill, plus he got me another 50% on my settlement.
Good luck and keep asking if you need someone to discuss this with- you are getting lots of good advice here.
Don

Best of luck Roger on the next chapter, you sound like a very dedicated, reliable and conscientious person so I'm sure someone else will recognize those traits and snap you up. As someone thats in management, I certainly look for those traits in employees and often question when applicants have a new job every couple years. Reflect on what's important and keep your head up! Take care.
I got a lot accomplished , also added to the list , never finished the 70 vert, still in the works , too many distractions . Parents had sold the farm , so that ate up some time , got them moved into town and settled.
Sooooo... I start my new job in Feb. another camp job working maintenance for a oil Sands company. Week in week out , fly right to the site From Saskatoon .
All in all , should work out good.
Thanks for all the moral support through this, it has been quite the year !

I know this story all too well. After seven months short of 30 years service, i lost my golden job. At the age of 52 (i am now 59) i found my self lost in disbelief. I took three years off and just played with my cars, worked on the house and tried to get over it. I tried my own business doing the same thing i did but could not make a go of it. I hope you make a go of what ever you do and at least you are still young to do it. Good luck.

Congrats Rog! Sounds like you'll be wearing an old hat at a new job. Only downfall is less shop time. But on a good note...won't have to stock the fridge as often. Now....go to work and have fun doing it!
Well 5 months in .. going real good ! Great group of guys to work with , technically challenging , but I'm getting up to speed real quick . Biggest difference for me , is what our deptartment does is appreciated ! It's a small oil and gas operation, you get to know the field operators pretty good, and work together to get things running .
Its a 7 in 7 out camp job , great camp , good food , lots of rec stuff to do .
Im back on the tools and happy to be on them ! I'm not stressed , like I was at the old job !
The company is growing , I'm working through a maintenance contractor right now , but who knows , there may be opportunity to get hired on with the company .
all good !

Well , never get comfortable .. thats the new working reality ! LOL !!
The camp job came to an end , work was still there , but had slowed , and the contractor I subbed through , cut flights out of the package ... so driving each way 850 km wasnt appealing to me ! Ok in the summer .. but winter .. ???
Had a call to join a commissioning team in Regina , SK .. jumped on that opportunity . Currently there working now . Its a 10 week job , wasnt stressing over what to do after that !! shop is always full !
A good friend sent me a lead on a contract position for Husky Oil Lloydminster, resume in , phone call, Skype interview, and a month later .. have been offered that position .
So .. chapter 4 .. moving to Lloydminster for a year , rent a small house hopefully.. see what comes of it , if the contract continues?
Keeping our place in Prince Albert for now , our son is going to live there and take care of things . its Only a 3 hour drive away ... lets call it the cabin !
