2nd Poncho added to the stable. 1960 Catalina 4 door post car with original 389 and hydromatic

Hey guys, I stumbled upon this beauty and although I wasnt planning on owning a second Pontiac I feel its too good an opportunity to pass up, plus I love the body style.  Its a 1960 Catalina that comes with the original perfect running 389 (presently out of car) an 400 that has a miss (in the car) at hydromatic tranny (original out of car) and a turbo 400 in the car.  Interior is really nice, the body and frame is solid with minimal rust for its age and the glass is all good except for windshield (has a crack) and one tail light.  I am picking it up Saturday and am paying $3000.00 for it.  I have a pic of it  years ago and also what it looks like now.  Any advice, comments or warnings would be much appreciated from the many experienced minds here.

I know the post cars are less desirable but the guy is a really nice guy and knows his stuff and i can afford it!

Cool! Nothing wrong in cruising in a 4-door with character. The 400 & TH400 in there now are good to leave in place. I think 1960 was the first year for the 389, replacing the 370. Was it an old 4-speed Hydromatic?

Those curvy windshields are not cheap but are available at least.

Classic!

If the miss can be sorted out cheap, I'd stay with the 400 as well - unless you're planning to take it to Barret Jackson. Looks solid other than those few spots.

Looks like a low rider even without airbags.

Was there not a 389 in 59? I thought there was some sort of high perf 59 389 offered. Certainly can be wrong though, I have a ton to learn on US models...

Gotta love the 60 Pontiac Widetrack. 59 was the first year for the 389 up from 370. If you shipped that to New Zealand its value in that condition would be NZ$15,000 to 20,000. A book to look for that gives some good Pontiac facts is Pontiac 1946-1978 by Jan P Norbye and Jim Dunne

The guy I bought it of told me the original motor and tranny that are out of the car right now are numbers matching 389 coupled to a hydromatic.  Where can I get a windshield, you mentioned they are available?

 For the windshield try www.autocityclassics.com

Or PM me as you may be able to source it locally.

Unfortunately the sale didnt work out. When my dad and I got there it turned out to be a little more work than we estimated we could handle. Tons of potential but because of being exposed to a lot of moisture the car should be stripped down, allowed to dry out, blasted and primed or it will rust out. X Frame was solid, floors good, trunk gone side rocker on drivers side had some rot. really cool looking car if anyone else is interested and is more capable than I let me know and I will pass on the sellers info. BTW motor ran and sounded good except for small miss, probably a valve.

This is why I didn't comment earlier. I looked at your pictures and thought that it was a bit of a time/money pit.
