RE: Bought a vintage Panasonic RF4800 SW radio.

Thanks. I found a Radio Shack DX-440 on Kijiji for a good price. The reviews have been quite good for this radio. If the seller will ship I might pull the trigger on it.

The 440 is a decent radio. I hope you get it Todd.

I just picked up a super clean DX-160 for $99. I now have the 3 vintage radios I've always wanted.

Great job on the Panasonic repair! That could have been worse...

Love the Westinghouse console. I can say the gent was very kind on the repair charges. The lovely bright magic eye tube is worth a chunk of that bill! I also do these vintage repairs / restorations and do as a labour of love much like the elderly gent as one couldn't charge enough for the time it takes.

Recently did an electronic restoration on a friend's '51 Cadillac radio. Took a good 3 weekends - it had been dormant since 1969 as the car sat in a damp garage.

The DX160 is mint! Bought one from a pawn shop perhaps 30 years ago, c/w box, speaker and manual. Loved it, but gave to a friend who really admired it. Not *nearly* as nice as yours. Mostly discreet components so you'll be able to keep it running forever, like an old Pontiac. Good on you!

Realistic & Heathkit, those names bring back memories. My brother had an old Tandy shortwave that we could listen in to the control tower at Mount Hope Airport. Dad had an underdash radio in his 66 Biscayne, but when that radio was stolen in 68 after somebody smashed the vent window, he replaced it with a Philips slide-in AM/FM/SW radio. It could be pulled out and run independently since it also had a battery backup and a telescopic antenna. That was the first place I heard of Cheech & Chong - Big Bambu back in 72 on a college radio station.

Got my Realistic DX-160 yesterday to complete the trio...

Picked up an Ameritron 5 position remote antenna switch so I can "experiment" with different antennas, and have only one feedline coming in for no clutter. Neat being able to switch instantly between different lengths and positions.

The single feedline comes into a MJF tuner, then to a 3 position switch out to the receivers. They all are pretty decent, and I'm actually surprised with the DX-160, it can hold it's own, and is super sensitive and stable on MW (am). The Yaesu is the best on SSB. It's neat to be able to compare all 3 on the same freq. and input, and they all have their own unique characteristics.

Next, I have to work on placing a decent ground rod outside the shack, and get a good impedance matched dipole way up high between my two big trees.

I'm enjoying all this, but it's getting time to switch into big block mode,

Nice. I was telling Mark in a PM that I picked up a Realistic DX-440. It worked great for about 20 minutes. Now it won't come on and the LCD display has every segment lit up. I tried a few of the tricks for this issue that I read online but nothing has worked so far. Next trick is to try it on battery only. It takes 6 D cells which I need to buy. Who has D cells in the house anymore? lol

Awesome Darryl! Although I'm using a Bose speaker and headphones with it, I've actually been looking for one to at least compliment the look of the receiver.

Seems to be hit and miss to have one included in a sale.

Nice setup! There's something about just sitting with a wall of radios in front of you isn't there!
