67 Parisienne heater core question

This car is a non ac car.

Well went for a drive last night and the heater core started leaking!

Im 43 years old and this is my first heater core!

(interesting fun fact)

The question is are replacement cores good quality?

Or is it smarter to rebuild the original?

I also was wondering when I take it apart should I buy the rubber seal

Hubbard Impala sells? Or use sealer?

Thanks Greg

I would advise against recoring it. However, the jobber cores aren't perfect, all made in China. I'd still pick that over a recore though.

Best is if you can find an NOS core for sale somewhere.

Spectra Premium is a Canadian company producing Radiators and heater cores.

I have heard good things about them.

The web site is not too helpful but they do have distributors probably in your neighbourhood.

We have sold Spectra at work for many years. Yes, if I would recommend any jobber core, it would be their's. Chances are though the core that comes from them will be Chinese. We've had very good luck with their stuff though. Some stuff made in Canada, some stuff imported.

I have a Spectra (Canadian made) to install in my car.('64 Parisienne). Looks way better than the one that NAPA sells.

On a 67 you should be able to remove the inner fender, then have access to the speed nut hidden behind the inner fender. Otherwise, you can drill out the head of the bolt from within the passenger footwell.

Not so fast on the Impala one. If I recall, the heater core for my 70 Laurentian was for a Chevelle (maybe Big Ray can chime in as he gave it to me). I think the Impala ones had the hose connections coming straight out of the firewall, instead of bending towards the inner fender.

When Rick (67rag396) passed away 5 years ago, I bought a pressure tested heater core from his estate. I'm sure it's still in the garage, and if so you can have it for shipping costs. Best to pressure test it again when you receive it to ensure it's good.

Let me know if interested.

67 and 68 should be the same. No need to remove the inner fender. A long extension and a swivel does the trick. Did mine twice. The first one only lasted a year. Second one's been good for over 10 years. Pretty sure it is a Spectra. Not so sure about the Impala thing. Pretty sure it was for Pontiac but that was over 10 years ago. Lots of guys here on site with an old GM parts book should be able to verify for you.

Just bend the inner fender gently out of the way and your home free. Undo a couple of bolts to give you more freedom..

Here's the heater core I got from Rick's (67rag396) estate garage sale after he passed away in 2012.   It was for his 67 2+2.  2-1/2" wide.  I can't remember the width of the ones for my 70, but I have one I bought for a 70 Impala, and it's only 2" wide.

This is yours for the cost of postage from Calgary.  As I said above (and denoted in the City-Wide Radiator tag), it's been pressure tested, but best you have it tested again before installation.

Bought from Lordco. Was not exactly the same had to adjust it to fit. As for the seal I used trailer puddy. The stuff they use when installing windows. Bolted back together and trimmed off excess puddy. Worked like a charm. Heat too...

good luck

James

I am going to revive this heater core thread.

Looking at replacing the heater core in my 68 Grande core and I have been doing a bit of research on CP and pricing cores out with various vendors accordingly. 67poncho speaks about the Spectra Premium 94531 w/o AC heater core and indicates that it is about $80. Just looking at Rock Auto for a 68 Impala and the 94531 Spectra heater core is $40.55 Cdn and another $13.59 to ship it. Less my 5% CP discount of $2.03 and the core is pretty darn cheap.

That is quite reasonable in price but is it going to last a few years?? From what I can read, it looks like Spectra could possibly be one of the better replacement cores available, but I don't want to replace it again in a year or have the thing leak out of the box. My 68 Grande w/o AC heater core looks like the two hoses come straight out of the firewall, but who knows if it is original.  I have not removed mine yet so I am debating whether I should just order it up for $53??

Jake

Jake, I'm not convinced the number Vince posted is right. I'm wondering if he listed the Chevy application.

The OEM number for your core is 3014083 and I don't see that in the bottom row with those 3 OEM numbers listed.

The interchange I find for 3014083 is a 94532 Spectra. Crazy as it seems, the interchange is 68-72 Chevelle, Cutlass and Skylarkw without A/C.

Just another case of our Canadian Pontiacs being unique. No other B body appears to use this core. I would have lost a bet on this one.

Yep Carl, you are correct that it is the 94352 Spectra Premium. And, my 68 does have the bottom tube that bends inward towards the passenger fender. It looks like the original core in there and it has 67L Harrison stamped into it. The measurements on the Harrison appear to bang on with the 94352.

That 94352 Spectra is only $32 at Rock Auto and yes indeed, it is for a Chevelle.

I removed mine and I am contemplating of going commando. (sans heater core) I am really fearful of installing a new core and have it fail in a short while and have to do this all over again.

hmmm............To delete or not delete?? confused.gif

Jake

I would hook it up. Spectra has been a great product in my experience, and I've sold a fair bit of their stuff.

There will be times where you will be happy you did, i.e. coming home on a cool evening after you've been out for coffee with the CP boys.

And besides, your car is so original it would look a bit off if you didn't have it hooked up.

Spectra heater core it is! I had double the fun removing the heater core as the dealer added under dash AC is in the way of doing anything on the inside of the car. There is practically no room behind the glove compartment to pull the heater box off the firewall. What a pain in the derriere! But, I was successful. I ordered a Spectra 94352 from Rock Auto.
