Where can I find 3/4" - 1" steel U-channel?

I need to find some lengths of steel or aluminum U-channel. They need to be at least 3/4" inside the U to fit a sheet of plywood into it. Tried Home Depot last night, nothing.

Any ideas?

Metal supermarket around dublin and notredame,  not really easy to get to, but they have all kinds of cutoffs.  Used them when i built my trailer hitch.

Oh, never heard of them. I'll have to check it out.

I may have found my solution. I was just at my sister in law's where she's still cleaning up some stuff my brother had hoarded. I found some sheets of metal that would be perfect if someone out here has a metal brake (and I think my former neighbour does). Some nice stuff, just the right size and gauge. I may be able to make my own channel.

Aluminium J-channel, for soffit or siding, comes in a variety of dimensions. Home Hardware would carry it. I've used vinyl J-channel for all kinds of things.

I need this for the cabin. I want to cover the windows with plywood each fall when I close up, and I want to just slide the sheets in a channel across each window. I don't think vinyl would be tough enough would it Mike? We have a Home Hardware in town, I'll see if they have aluminum.

We have one of these beside our shop. They have every thing and as said they have cut off ends. Good prices

Just asking, how r u going to fasten u channel to the cabin? Bugger to drill/screw on an angle. Can drill pilot hole on outer side of the u..but a pain. Do you have a router? 1x2 wood and router out a groove and use 1/2" then you have 1 1/2 of wood to screw through. Thinking also would look better on a cabin than shiny alum? Just a thought.

Yes, I had planned to drill an outer hole. I know it's a pain but I can't see how else I would do it.

I don't have a router but that thought came to mind when I was shopping for the stuff the other night. I know someone who could easily do that for me.

As long as I can get the use of a brake to bend this stuff, I think it will be metal though. I can paint it up to match so it won't look so bad. Plus it's not as bulky as wood.

How about unistrut. All different sizes and aluminum or steel or ss. Not going to be very good looking though. Are you trying to keep out the Manitoba grizzlies?

Would you consider a galvanized U channel that is intended for industrial electrical application. It is primarily used with fastners to hold electrical cable trays and Tech Cables. These U channel also come with multiple versatile trolleys for suspension devices. Anyway in closing, it is galvanized, a little wide thought, just enough for a couple sheets of Teflon to shim the 3/4" marine plywood nice and tight.
Just another thought
regards

That sounds right along the line of what I think would work. Where would I go for something like this? Any suggestions?

The stuff is called UniStrut...used it a lot over the years at the shop. I'm sure there are lots of (industrial ) places that carry it.

looking in the catalog reminds me of Meccano... lots of fittings to do lots of things with it.

On the mother in-laws cabin, we have studs threaded into the window frames and corresponding holes in each shutter and hold them on with wing nuts and washers. On and off easy peasy.
