RE: 1984 Grand Prix, Moncton Ontario

I always thought those were great looking cars and that G body platform was SO good. Reliable, cheap and easy to fix if needed, parts are plentiful, perfect size vehicle.

The car looks to be in excellent shape and a very nice example. I see that the car is in Moncton, New Brunswick, not Moncton, Ontario. I have been to both and they aren't the same place.

Richard Petty switched to a Pontiac Grand Prix back then because of the aerodynamics of the 1981+ models.

It is funny, but this week I have been looking at 1981-86 Grand Prixs online all week. In 1984 they came with either the Buick 231 2-barrel V6, a 305 4-barrel Chevy V8, or the infamous Oldsmobile 350 diesel.

1982 was interesting in that no gasoline V8s were offered in U.S. Grand Prixs, just a 231 2-barrel V6, a somewhat rare 252 4-barrel V6 (Grand Prix only offered it in '82 - it was a rare 1980 - 82 offering that came in LeSabres and sometimes even Cadillac Sedan DeVilles). Only Canadian '82 Grand Prixs offered a 305 Chevy as well.

I originally was trying to find out how many were built with the 5.7 Olds diesel but I couldn't find any numbers. I think that there were something like 143 Monte Carlos built with the diesel but probably next to none left now as a result of the big debacle. Head bolt problems, crank balancing problems, no water-fuel separator, all GM cost-cutting by accountants. Later the problems were fixed but it was too late, the reputation was completely trashed. I saw a diesel Grand Prix near New Orleans back in 1991 but have never seen nor heard of another. It said 5.7 Diesel on the trunk lid and had dual exhausts without cats, plus dual batteries. It made 115 horsepower, cost $700 extra (a/c was required as well) but delivered 30 U.S. mpg. (that's 36 Imperial mpg!)

It seems to me the US Regals had the same problem for a few years in the mid 80's, no V8? Or was it that the only V8 they had was the 307 Olds engine, I forget now. Anyway, no 305 Regals in the US for a number of years.

It seemed these (and the Cutlass, and Buick equivalents) were everywhere and now you hardly ever see one.

There were 2 of these in my neighborhood within the last 10 years. I haven't see a single one since.

Any car can make it to 10 years with minimal effort. 15 years is the limit. After that it is up to the early and ongoing efforts of a long-term loving caretaker to be able to find a survivor.
