53-54 L6 starters :"Resolved"

I am having an issue with my starter solenoid and throttle linkage, is there two different configurations on this year of starter where the solenoid is mounted either at 10 oclock  vs 12 oclock?(looking into firewall) If so what year/6 or 8 flathead am I looking for to get the 10 oclock config.? Just needing a case would work to as my starter is all good just solenoid location hits linkage.

Thanks

I will try to get you some more pics tomorrow when I go to work as that is where the 54 is currently stored.

As I recall when I installed a '54 motor in my '50 years ago, that was one of the differences. I think the starters are the same, just the bell housing mounting is different. I could be wrong but I've got a couple here to compare and I'll report back.

Brian that's great pic. Confirms that I have the wrong starter/solenoid configuration. Mounting holes on bellhousing look to be the same location. The PO contacted me and says he has located one for me for $100, seems okay price.. yes/no?

yes price sounds ok,they are not super common.I think they may have made different starters for manuals and automatics, not totally sure but that would be my guess.I will take a pic of the starter in my 49 tonite, its a standerd, the 54 pic is an automatic. My 49 actually has a later 51-54 2 barrel motor in it.Trying to track down some pervious owners to get the complete story on the car.

Yes that is what I need and hopefully have located but I noticed that the throttle linkage is different. My linkage will go over top of the solenoid once its out of the way.....I'm hoping?

yes this is off my 49 and the throttle linkage on it actually runs behind the block instead of down the p.s and then over top of the block like the 54's

I found a starter with the solenoid at the 10 o'clock position as well as another case so if this starter doesn't work I can flip over my electrics into it. Here's hoping!

Now that I have the correct starter looks like the bell housings is from pre 53. It has the mounting holes at roughly 11 & 4 O'CLOCK which only  accepts the older starters that have the solenoid at the 12 o'clock position. To use a 10 o'clock position solenoid the mounting holes need to be a 12 & 6 o'clock.

Chime in if you have other insight please!

RE: 53-54 L6 starters :"Resolved"

50sedandelivery, Murray you had the answer, it looks like my bell housing is pre 53 and the mounting holes are different for the proper solenoid location starter. So I have just modified the linkage for now using the older style starter but plan on changing bell housings if I get the parts car I'm looking at. Good job.
