Help with carb ID

carb.JPGcarb2.JPGWith most of my other projects complete after a nice summer, I am finally ordering a bunch of stuff from Rock Auto today including a rebuild kit for the Carb. All I can find is the Tag as pictured. Nothing stamped into the housing. There are only 2 choices on their website but I have no clue as to which one to order. Any suggestions?

I sell Autoline here at work. As soon as I get a spare moment I can track that one for you.

64-66 283 and 327. The original GM number for the carb would have been 7025121. That number should be what you need to get any parts for it.

It would appear Rockauto does not have this kit. Comparing the hgasket pictures from their site to ones on ebay and they do not match. To bad cause RockAuto has good pricing.

An SMP kit #322F should do it. They stock it, I just don't know why they don't list it for that application.

Contact The carburetor shop in the US, he makes his own leather accelerator pumps. He is real fussy about selling you the right kit, what car/engine do you have? They are not cheap, but they are the best. He won't sell you a kit unless he knows the original aluminum tag off these old 4GC's, that number Carl provided may work, but he would sell a different kit for a 283,327 250HP, 327-300HP, 409, powerglide, manual, etc. I don't think they sold a factory 283 with a 4 barrel in a full size car after the 327 came out, but you may have a non full size.

On his site, he shows that number, 7025121, as for a 65 Chev 327 powerglide. I've screwed with several old 4GC's, I like a Carter or a Quick Fuel much better.

The engine is a 1967 327....in a 64 CS. I am just ordering the kit. A friend will do the rebuild. I will play with 2 stroke carbs but thats as far as my knowledge goes!

I should get you to work on my 2 stroke carbs, they are nothing I touch.

He lists only a Q Jet for a 67 327 4 barrel, you must have a non 67 intake? I know nothing about 67's, just what I read. Other than a Holley on some Camaro's.

It sounds like you have an earlier carb on a later engine alright. They didn't use that carb past 1966 I believe.

This is how it was when I got the car. I dont forsee any issue running this carb on the engine stated.....Or am I missing something?
Send the 2 stroke over. They are fun to play with

Those carbs are notorious for having a bad hesitation but they are great on fuel.

if I don't have a carter at hand the rodchesters are a good substitute easy to modify, and good on fuel as stated, not bad on performance either.

I suspect most guys will say otherwise but I know 2 guys who have bought brand new Edelbrock carbs and hated them from the day they took them out of the box. Nothing but grief.

The 4GC's have a small bore, they Edelbrocks and Holleys have a slightly larger bore, so you may need an adapter to go to a different carb. Nothing wrong with trying to fix the 4GC if you've already ordered that kit.

Is your 327 stock- what HP? The 4GC is about 450CFM, the 327 250 HP had this carb in 62 and later, the 300HP had a 500CFM Carter AFB, with the larger bores. The 409 had a 4GC, but it was unique and also had larger bores. 4GC's are getting hard to get parts for, if it is completely worn out.

I put a 600 CFM Quick Fuel on my 283, had to use an adapter and downsize the carb jets since a 600 is way too big for a stock 283. I am not a Holley guy, but this carb worked perfect, is very well made, and parts are readily available, it is a knockoff Holley and the Holley parts fit. Because of the big top on the Quickfuel and the way those fuel lines are situated, I also had to use an adapter on top to use a stock breather. It had an electric choke which I really liked.

The Street Demon is also a very good carb, but 625CFM is the smallest.

ive never used the edelbrocks, mine are all the smaller factory carters, they run perfect, but they need modifying as most carbs, ive even ran the larger 409 units on the 327 just a little harder on fuel. I suspect since the edelbrocks are based on later series carbs they need work.ive run the rodchesters on highpo 327s without a problem, they run out of steam at the top end but otherwise perform well.
