4L80E question,


I'm interested in doing a heavy duty overdrive.

Will a 4L80E fit in the Tunnel of a 65-70 B Body?

It's a very big transmission, and the tunnel seems pretty small.

63 Impala with 4L80E installed

I removed my 700R and replaced it with a 4L80E. Fits just fine. 
Had to modify my parking brake. I modified the 700R crossmember and 
used it but I will make something better.

Thanks for the info Carl. Being a X frame, he must have had his work cut out for him, but obviously that was a top shelf conversion.

I really think the tunnel is pretty small on the 65-70. While I know the cross member obviously must be modified, it's the floor pan clearance that I think would be a legit concern.

If you come across anybody with my body style having done this, let me know of the link. If it can be done without too much hacking and beating for clearance, then I'll try to find a good core. Something to keep me busy this winter. I'll need it as my Daughter just started University in residence, and we're empty!

Can't wait for the updated thread with regards to the 4L 80E in the 65-70 B Body. I was looking at the GM performance site and the latest trans is the 4L 85-E and I was wondering if that trans would fit into my 68 GP. I think it could use an overdrive as well, so it is our good fortune that cdnpont has a winter project in mind!! LOL

Thanks Jake. I have sights on what appears to be a very good 1998 4L80E. If all goes well, I'll have it in my shed this coming weekend.

for many years ACC did not offer a 4spd carpet  for the 65-70 Chevy 'B' bodies. We simply sold a 'automatic with no problems. They now offer a 4spd. application. Visually the 4 spd has a slight hump on the left side of the tunnel. Other wise they look the same

 my 2 cents....check out the installs on "you tube" 1st....i think you have to buy a convertor for the electronics....no speedo hookup

a 200r is the way to go now....there are upgrades available....its lighter...smaller....same size as a 350 th.....Bob

I installed a 4L80E in a street rod (49 Meteor coupe) behind a stout BBC. Although I bought it brand new a number of years ago, it has never been 'powered up' so to speak. The clearance problem wasn't an issue in my case because I built the floor around the transmission, which as indicated above in Carl's post is substantially bigger than a TH350/400.

In my case I elected to go for a different convertor and after much research went with one from Pro Torque....TCI got the nod for the electronics. The speedo hookup is easy and there is a kit now available for a few bucks that eliminates the requirement for electronics but the down side is a manual shifting automatic transmission.

I have a friend that has recently installed a new 4L85E with a GM convertor and electronics that cost him over $7K Canadian dollars. That's a lot of moola but the 4L80/85E's are tough transmissions and are supposed to take abuse without breaking a sweat...

None the less, the post above from beaucarlo is worth investigating especially when size is a consideration.
