New from North Carolina, with a Canadian Firebird.

Hi all!
Just thought I'd drop in and check out the forum. I grew up in upstate NY near Buffalo and now live in sunny NC. I have had my share of Trans Am's, but I currently have one that was produced for sale in Canada.

Here are a few details:

1978 Trans Am Y88 Special Edition

72,000km survivor, never apart or restored.

Original 400ci Pontiac with 4 speed, so that makes it 1 of the 1267 produced.

It still has the Canadian import sticker inside the drivers side door jam.

It has a few flaws, but the paint is original thanks to Permashine.

It runs and drives like new. I enjoy taking it out to Cars & Coffee events here and it always get some smiles.

Just recently I got in touch with the original selling dealer in Toronto, and the gave me some license plate frames, a stick on dealer name and even dug up an old Pontiac key chain for me. Thought that was cool.

Anyways, here it is-

Welcome aboard. You can also contact GM Vintage Vehicle Services here in Canada. For a fee they'll send you all the GM info on the car- date it was built, production numbers, options on the car etc. Well worth having.

Forbes Motors has a reputation for selling a lot of nice  performance Pontiac's dating back into the 60's and 70"s.

Your's is clearly one of them !

My 75 Esprit was sold at Forbes. Ray is right. It sounds like the sales team there were well versed in performance Pontiac's.

Grew up near Buffalo, New York, eh? You probably remember watching Irv Weinstein on Eyewitness News on channel 4, or perhaps even Commander Tom on Rocketship 7 (that was 1969-ish or so). Welcome to the site. That T/A is pretty nice and loaded to boot. Fulzgold? I would say you scored because your T/A looks like solid gold!

I remember the Gold T/A package; it looked even better in person than in the brochure. GM had problems with laying down the gold paint without getting 'tiger stripes' so the 1979 models went back to black. My older brother's friend bought one just like it new (1 of the 1267  & also was a W72 4-spd) in 1978 and he babied it, that is until his new wife became his ex wife and she got the car. It became her all season car and she was clueless about maintenance & driving. I remember her asking us to help her get unstuck in the snow; when we found where the car was 'stuck' it was just sitting in the middle of the road with a dusting of snow. She couldn't feather the clutch to get it going. Of course the GR70-15 Goodyear summer radials didn't help but it had Safe-T-Track. We just hopped in and drove it. It probably left her possession around 1982 in London, Ontario. Hopefully some caring soul was able to rescue it.

I remember all of that! lol But I also remember those great occasions that we could get CHCH TV11 out of Hamilton. Wrestling, Roller derby and Curling!

The paint is certainly not perfect and you can see some of the striping. Also, some of the pin stripes don't line up great. They were making over 500 Firebirds a day in this era, so they were pretty much thrown together.

Yes, it is a highly optioned car. AC in Canada? Sure! It's not close to being perfect. Main thing is that someone cut a hole in the fender (probably on day 2) for the aftermarket antenna.

As for the name FULZGOLD, I had that made up over 30 years ago when I had my first Y88. It's on my new plates too.

Welcome. Cool Car. I've been along the Cape Hatteras drive up from Virginia Beach ... saw your great lighthouse, boardwalks, waterfront houses/cottages on stilts, and the Wright Bros. monument. Nice trip. I really liked eating at Sonic on the way!chew.gifbiggrin
