  1. The Must For Rust and a scotch brite pad will make quick work of it. Available in a spray bottle at Home Depot.

  2. Really make sure those wire wheels dont leave any stray pieces of wire in the block.

  3. I got a pair of surface rusted heads in a tub of molasses, I'll tell you how it goes in about 3 weeks.

As the son of a baker, that sounds like a huge waste of molasses.

  5. Gibbs brand penetrating oil, I can't link to it from here, but it takes surface rust away.

Is it at all painted? Rusting on a gasketing surface? Where you are going to paint?

Engine block in the house for the picture, I love it!

Pascal, why do you need it cleaned? Is it just so you can paint it?

Carl,

I had to bring it in the house to check a cylinder that I thought was cracked, I tested it with penetrant and developer ( NDT procedure ) The good news it isn't cracked, just scratched. The block had to be room temperature warm to do it, my garage is not heated. Rust inside the engine/heads should be all removed and outside, it just doesn't look good.

I've painted over worse than that and it lasted fine. However, the inside stuff is more of a worry, yes.

No heated garage? I thought you had built one a few years back for some reason.

  4. Works wonders if you have the time to wait. Truck bed rails came out like new!! Plastic 45 gal drum and let soak, some heavy tie wire/chain and let sink to the bottom.

NDT, Non Destructive Testing . It is often a white powder on one side and a red die from the other. The red die is very invasive and it shows any pin hole or crack as a blood stain in the white. Often used in the nuclear industry. Some also call it die penetrate. My experience was on steam lines that could not be radiographed.

Yup, I learned some of it along the NDT techs at work as they use it on our aircraft parts ... How it works : First you clean the area real good ( contact or brake cleaner works, spray it with the red dye penetrant in a can, let that sit on the suspected crack for 1/2 hour, wipe that off with a soaked lint free rag, then spray the white developer in a can so if there is a crack the red dye that penetrated the crack if there is one, will show it.

Pascal, probably the best way I can think of dealing with the rust on those parts is to just give them to me and you won't have to worry about it. biggrin

Nothing but the best service for my friends. It may take a "few years" to get them back to you though..............
