Went to the cabin yesterday morning. I knew I was taking a chance because I have a 2 wheel drive pickup, but the urge to be there was too strong!
I love being there any time of year. The lake is still partly open.
The sunsets are still nice although so far south they are hidden behind the horizon.
And of course, it was a good thing I took my 12,000 lb winch along for security. Needed it to get back up onto the road from the driveway. In the picture, to the far left you can just make out the winch chained to a tree, then the cable running across the road to the truck. As you can see by the snow, nobody else was around. Quite quiet.
Carl, 12C here today and sunny, will take the boat for a last run and then put it away for the winter.
I'd enjoy some good outdoor ice skating, we get some much snow and thaw, its hard to get a good smooth ice surface. We have a fresh water pond near us that freezes over for a couple of months, but the freeze thaw means its hard to get and keep good ice. I like a bit of real winter like you have there.

Beautiful out there in the winter! So quiet and peaceful. Love wintertime out at the lake. Plan on spending more time ice fishing this winter than past years. But I am working away on my wagon this winter as well. I have all day today to finish the roof polishing-finally-took me about 35 hours of sanding and polishing to finish just the roof alone!!
Anyway-thanks for posting such nice pics-love the old wagon pics as well.
I am convinced that all the people who whine about winter have never given it a chance. In a lot of ways I prefer it over summer, especially those 35 degree days where you can hardly get a proper breath.

winter just means more work for me, almost slid over a icy drop with the plow truck, at least its a old school GMC, two hours of snow blowing a bridge walkway, im having to tow my work trailer around with my truck because my ford doesn't have a hitch nor do I think that it could tow, winter is not fun at this house, and this year in particular the day I hit the big 50 ive already fallen twice pulled my back and a muscle in my leg.
Winter is just something to be endured, and helps me appreciate the other three seasons so much more. We had a cold early start this year, not seeing temps above 0 C from Oct 31 to Nov 22. It was like we skipped ahead to January suddenly.
My truck is sitting on the little short stretch of road that turns off the main road. From there, we split off onto 3 driveways for 3 different cabins, our's being one of them. It's hard to tell in the picture but I'm not in the boonies there, just turned off onto our road and my 2 wheel drive wouldn't climb it. Way to mild, it's so slippery then. At +2, no traction, at -20 it's a whole different game.

+2 I miss a number of car shows in the summer cause I cant take the heat
Carl, get a set of woods chains with the cross links. Your 2WD with some weight will go anywhere you have the height to clear.

Where can I buy those? I was with my next door neighbour (lake neighbour, not home neighbour) and we were talking about chains. I just have never shopped for them.

winter season is not that long and we don't get that much snow anymore but my choice has been 4 wheel drive. A great deal on a 2wd could play apart on choice for sure. My work truck is only a 2wd but has a posi. The low range you get with 4wd also is a great plus
The problem is, I need a 4 wheel drive once a year for this trip, maybe twice. I can't justify it for just that. I plan to look into the tire chain option though.

Lived in the northern part of Ontario almost my entire life ( until the last 11 years ). Never owned a 4 wheel drive and can count on 2 fingers the number of times the 2 wheel drive wasn't sufficient. The extra cost of 4 wheel drive I just couldn't justify.
However, I did learn more than a few tricks about how to both avoid and get out of situations.
Friend of mine used to drive a tow truck and he'd say " the difference between 2 wheel and 4 wheel is how far off the highway you have to go to pull them out "
Alot of it depends on lifestyle. I've only had 4 wheel drive trucks and all wheel drive SUVs for as long as I can remember and I find they aren't much more expensive to buy. But we spent lots of time in the hills snowmobiling and snowboarding and yes you could make it up there many times with a 2 wheeler why sweat it when you can just flick a switch rather than chain up. I chained up a few times when I was younger and really didn't enjoy it. I know I felt so much more comfortable when my wife would go up with my kids to the ski hill every weekend many times plowing through tons of snow and that all wheel drive never left her on the side of the road. Same thing with us going over the Coke regularly, just love what that extra traction adds. Pretty tough to change once you've had it.
Carl, most tire shops that deal with commercial tires will sell those "V-bar" chains. Not cheap, and generally made to size for your tires, but I don't think they can be beat for winter traction. Tirecraft, Kal tire, Fountain tire (I think)
We sell a lot of tires at work but never get asked for chains. I'll have to check with our supplier, maybe I can even get them through my work. I get a great deal on tires, maybe it will work for chains too.

Dougie's going to have a tough time with that one.
I guess this is my comeback for Phillips "My office view for today" thread!
Hahaha! Touche Carl! Certainly looks amazing! Snow is not something we experience here in oz unless its winter in the snowies high country!
would love to get to canada for hols. Friend of ours is in toronto at the moment for 3 months. I reckon aussies and canadians are bery much alike!
