Has anyone taken the glass out of a mirror like this?
I have a spare mirror for my car that is nice and tight at the pivot. However, it sounds like a salt shaker when I shake it, a bunch of particles inside, I assume some sort of rust or corrosion. That snap ring has barely a gap at the ends and I'd rather not break the glass removing it. Any ideas to get the snap ring out so I can remove the glass?
Quite a while ago I posted some pictures & instructions on repairing a mirror. It was a rectangular one but I'm sure everything would apply. I've no idea how to find the post but removing the glass just requires letting it sit in gasoline until the adhesive lets go then it drops right out. As I recall mine soaked for a couple of days.
I think this one must be different than that style Brian. I can see a snap ring that runs all the way around the glass to hold it in, except for maybe 1/16" or so gap at the ends of the ring. It doesn't look like they've put a notch in the ends of the snap ring to permit getting some sort of a pick to pry it away.
By looking at it I'm quite sure there is no adhesive holding the glass on this one.
I'll search for that post you did which shows your's just to be sure though.

there should be a notch in the ring, to get a small pry tool into. there will be 3 small springs behind the glass to push it tight against the retainer ring.
they are tough but i did one a couple weeks ago

I got one of these repros from a shop here in Langley. It was marked for a GTO. The trouble that I had with it was that at highway speed it would not stay in place. I decided like Carl to take it apart to see why. The piece that clamps the ball pivot was not tight enough to hold so with a little bending was able to make it work the way it was suppose to. On the repros there are three springs that put pressure on the mirror glass to hold it in place. This made it easier to get the glass out as I was able to push the glass in some to remove the snap ring. I have not tried to remove the glass from an original so don't know if there is the same give as the repros.

Had the same problem with an oem mirror. Just tilted it all the way out (removed from car) andd gave it a small centre punch mark(or 2) on ball. Tightened up just enough so it wouldn't move and marks were hidden when mirror pulled in.
