Everyone talks about it, but not everyone likes it!

Haha, actually my wife would be fine with it other than her health limitations. Farm girl, she learned to drive in a 66 GMC 3/4 ton 292 4 speed.

Both our daughters first new cars were standards. To quote them " it ain't a real sports car if it isn't a standard "

Haha, I knew that would get a reaction. Manual trans is just more fun, but at the drag strip the automatic now rules...

And that's sad, especially for spectators. I liked the old days were there was always the chance the faster car could lose due to a missed shift.

Several guys are running 409's in real cars with 4 speeds, in the low 9's.

For sure, and my hat is off to them! That being said they'd be solidly in the 8's with an auto-magic trans. An example is a guy fairly well known in street racing circles with a convertible TA. Sketchy Vert. 6 speed car, mid to low tens, occasionally dipping in to the high 9's. All over the track, inconsistent, and slow for the hp the car makes. He very recently pulled the 6 speed in favor of an auto and now the car runs consistent high 8's...and goes straight down the middle of the track. Faster, but less fun to watch.
