65 US Impala Cowl Tag Question

Yesterday I took this picture of the tag on a US model 65 Impala SS convert 4 speed car. Does anyone know what the stamped "28" might signify? I'm not sure I recall seeing something like this before.

No help to you on this one Carl.
Did you post it over on Chevy Talk? I'm sure those guys in the 65/66 forum will have an answer in minutes.....

Yes, but I don't know how to put a picture there so I posted a link to here.

Weird one huh?

You have to use a hosting site or be a contributor. I'd guess if its factory, maybe a shift number? Or inspector number? I don't recall seeing a number stamped like that except for a special build/order like say a government run in a custom colour, which I doubt would apply to a 4 speed SS convertible.

Certainly the way it's crooked indicates hand stamped. From what I can tell, the car was a 327.

Also, it's interesting that the body number is 110 and yet the vin was in the 6000's.

Funny as this sounds I saw a data plate somewhere on line today with that same 28 stamping but with my old brain I'm having trouble finding it again. I watch 65 Impala SSs so it might have been on one.

Paint around that data plate looks to be blue. So is it a Canadian car? But then again it doesn't say GM Canada on the plate.

Ok so I found it. It was on ebay but the listing is now ended .
Now to tax my memory a bit more I think the data tag said 163675 and the VIN said 164675. There were pics of each tag. The 163 would indicated an Impala 6 cylinder and 164 would be an Impala 8 cylinder.
Here's the listing but only the 1 pic now.

Was able to click on the 1 pic and it brought up the rest of the pics. It's faint but the 28 appears to be there on the data tag.

Note: both STL manufacturing plants. And both low body numbers.

The 28 is the inspectors #.

Now that's a good question, I'm not sure. I never checked if they were St Louis.

Some assembly plants did different things, like this stamp for instance

That would sure explain it.

I google imaged "65 Impala Cowl Tag" and found similar stuff, and I think there was one from LOS with no stamp as well.

Buried in this ebay auction is pictures of the data tag on a rather nice 65 Impala SS convertible.

Once again it is a 65 Impala ( or SS ) convertible manufactured at the StLouis plant.
Once again it has the 28 stamped manually into the data plate.
I detect a pattern.

Maybe problem with first run convertible tops leaking and the stamp indicates it was tested in water spray booth for leaks. Just a wild guess

Here's another St Louis plant convertible data tag with 28 stamping.
Note the improper rivets on this one.

Is it legal to take a cowl tag and move it to another similar vehicle?

As far as I've seen, in Canada it's legal to swap cowl tags although the deception side of it could likely get to be a legal issue if it's for monetary gain.
