Feds to gather data on every new vehicle registered in Canada, plus most older ones.(Aren't vehicles registered already)

https://globalnews.ca/news/4065923/database-cars-trucks-canada-government-climate/

The federal government is looking to collect data on every light-duty vehicle currently on Canadas roads, plus all new vehicle registrations that happen in the future.

Natural Resources Canada issued an advance contract award notice on Tuesday morning for the creation of a data collection system that will be required in the coming years (2018 to 2023) and will focus solely on vehicles in Canada.

There will be two databases, according to the department.

The first will be an inventory of all new vehicle registrations, broken down by year. It will contain detailed information about light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles, including brand, model, series, type of fuel, province of registration and detailed information with respect to the motors.

The second database will be a detailed inventory of all light-duty vehicles currently on the road, identifying the registrations by brand, model, series, type of fuel, province of registration and, again, detailed information about the motor. A light-duty vehicle is classified as a vehicle weighing under 10,000 pounds.

The data for all vehicles on the road is needed to produce energy consumption estimates for the transportation sectors in Canada and the provinces, explained a spokesperson for Natural Resources Canada.

As for the new registrations, that information is being gathered to analyse and track trends in the types of vehicles being purchased by Canadians, the spokesperson said.

There are no concerns or issues pertaining to privacy as the data does not include any vehicle owner information such as names, addresses or other identifying information, the department noted.

The Office of Energy Efficiency at Natural Resources Canada is responsible for doing detailed reviews of the fuel consumption of vehicles in Canada, and the resulting impact on the countrys overall greenhouse gas emissions.

Canada has committed to a 30 per cent reduction in emissions levels (measured against 2005 levels) by 2030.

The government says its open to a formal bidding process for the database contract, but it has pre-identified DesRosiers Automotive Consultants in Richmond Hill, Ont., as the only known supplier that meets the mandatory criteria.

Founded in 1985, the company bills itself as the only consulting and market research company in Canada that works exclusively in the automotive sector.

The government says it will spend a maximum of $510,000 on the contract.

First step to banning sale of internal combustion vehicles.

My fear is because this registration seems to be about "detailed information with respect to motors",

the vehicles that don't have the necessary emissions of present day newer cars, they will be required to pay a

an additional carbon tax  to keep them on the road. I also have fears for all of us that have collectible cars.

Technically they won't ban them - yet. First order is to carbon tax the viability out of owning them and if that doesn't work, ban them.

Man I hate it when someone feels the need to create a legacy by becoming the savior for a problem that isn't really a problem. It will be a major problem for car enthusiasts though, but the up & coming generation is already indoctrinated about the internal combustion engine. If half the stuff they say is true then we shouldn't even be here yet here we are. Go figure...

True of false, ice age was man-made? True or false, the melting of the ice-age ice was caused by vehicles? Any rational person can see the answer, but it doesn't fit the narrative.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Of course Cam the growing number of scientists, and I don't mean babies who want milk, predicting an ice age as early as 2030 with temps in North America dropping by 10 degrees are not paid any attention because as you say it does not fit the Narrative.

I don't like that line "Canada has committed to a 30% emission reduction" !!!!! Does that mean their going to actually see how many "older" vehicles are on the road & maybe get them off the road??? I sure if they go after the classic/s antique/ collector car's there will be a rebellion!!!

I know this may cause some displeasure with some but perhaps it may be time for the classic car community to start speaking out. I have personally written several letters to my MP regarding the hobby and what it does for the economy. Keeping costs low for enthusiasts is important part of investing in the economy:

We buy fuel
we stay at hotels
we plate multiple cars in some cases
we buy food at resturants
our wives (significant others) go shopping while we are at shows and meets
we buy parts...etc. etc.

While I am on the fence of the part of the hobby that discusses the relevance of old bodies on new chassis and modern drive lines being exempt from emissions etc. There is valuable arguments both sides. Lets say they do decide to lump in newer drive lines with new car regulations and costs... this would greatly decrease the number of old cars that could be exempt form all this junk - give them some actual heritage classification and protection for once like an old building.

I cannot see my kids driving to a car show with a bunch of plastic bubble like cars with extension cords everywhere. - I feel a bit better with that little rant. I could go on for hours.

Would you please provide me with the source for this?

I don't think it is a secret to many regulars that I count many elected representatives as my personal friends, in fact at Christmas at our family party there was a Minister of State, former Mayor, and two city Councillors present, just a few who could make our party. We need facts and empirically proven data to make a case like this. Point me towards the empirical evidence and I'll throw another party just to get their ears.

No. Don't want to be targeted for a political debate on this forum, not seeking that. It's only an opinion like anyone else on here has.

Like they say on Family Feud, "Good answer Steve, good answer".

Thanks for saying that. I've been worrying this was going to turn political and we'd have to delete it.

Thanks for keeping it level guys.

Vehemently disagree with this assessment. Fail to see or understand how a simple request for information in support of a common cause is politically sensitive. confuse

Apparently I was offensive so I'll delete the statement and refrain from any further posts in the interest of keeping the peace.

Agree with Randy. I actually have more engines than cars! Does that disqualify me or am I guilty of double indemnity?

Inquiring minds want to know.
