Was throwing out some old Hot Rod magazines tonight and this one stopped me for 5 minutes to have a read. If you like NASCAR, its wacky rules for leveling competition and lost and found stories this piece may be for you. I enjoyed the read, hope you do too.
Nascar forced Chrysler to 305 from 426 cubes, in order to make it an equal playing field. The winged cars with the 426 were winning too many times and that makes for boring Nascar racing. The fans do not want to see the same car win all the time.

The 305 was created by using a special de-stroked crank supplied by Chrysler and dropping it in a 340. The cranks even used to be available through the Hustle Stuff program. Really it was created so Mopar could compete in the Trans Am racing series with the Challenger T/A & 'Cuda AAR.
The era of restrictor plates meant that the Hemi was no longer competitive (both Chrysler's 426 & Ford's Boss 429). Ford racers found a friend in the 351 Cleveland with its large canted valves. Meanwhile someone named Petty ran a 340.

10 or 15 years ago Speed TV aired old NASCAR races, and showed some from the 71 season. The underpowered Daytona's could keep up with the pack when drafting, but just didn't have the power to push through the air to stay in front.
