I've read the ad a couple of times, and while there are no claims of it being original, there are no admissions to the contrary either. There are subtle insinuations that it could be stock, in fact it appears to be written in a way that tries to gently mislead in my opinion.
It's nice, but it doesn't know what it wants to be either. Why put American emblems on the car, then swap in a Canadian Pontiac BBC? If you're feeling the American thing, why not drop in a 421?
I love cars of all flavors, and I despise most car sellers.
Chances are it was a 327 4-speed car originally. It is so easy to get VVS to send you the original as-built data on the car. In 1965 all 4-speeds were Muncies, and all 327 cars came with 12-bolt rears.
As for the 409s, they didn't build many in Canada and they apparently just used up the 409s they had sitting around until they were built out. I think there was a documented April built car with a 409 that rolled off the line in Oshawa. Maybe there were later cars built as well. When you have a few engines sitting around and only, say, a dozen orders for a 409 come through, they happen when they happen. It certainly was not worth it for GM Canada to do the big mid-year change to the Mark IV big block as they did in the U.S.

I thought 65 was a 409 early and a 396 late and the 427s came out in 1966?

This car is cool, isn't stock, but doesn't claim to be.
Yes, but the listing does omit just the right amount of information about the engine, and goes on to state that it is a factory 4 speed. The seller even talks about the Canadian GM documentation.

Yes, although I'd leave the optional cluster with oil and temp gauges in. Even though it's unique to US cars, it looks perfectly original and at home in our cars.

I can't believe I'm saying this about a big block, but I too think the car would be much more desirable with the 327 300 HP engine in front of that 4 speed. That was the hot set up in '65 since so few 409 cars were built.
I can't really see where the car is emblemed as a Bonneville other than the rear bezel, which is in there because Bonneville taillights have been installed, way nicer taillights in my opinion than stock Custom Sport. All in all everything that needs to be can be put right but the asking price is way too high if you are acquiring this car to make it correct again. Its a very good looking car.
Agreed, the Bonne tail is pretty good looking but I'd still want it back to original if it were mine. In this case, rare does equal desirable and that car in it's original form would certainly be valuable/appealing.
