He was a self employed mechanic for 25 years, died under a car that fell on him at home, he lived alone. 62. Had jacked up a car a few thousand times before, one blink, its over.
Doug had grade 8, he was in his 20's when they discovered he had dyslexia, which explained why he had trouble in school. He made a living as a mechanic by buying cars that had minor damage or a bad transmission, etc. and fixing them and selling them to ordinary people. His cars sold for $3-10,000 so you know who he had for customers. Some had bought 5-10 cars from him.
Doug sold about 30 cars a year, had his own house and 2 garages. What blew me away was at his funeral and wake, about 600 people showed up. He bought new parts at NAPA, Autochoice, etc. in a town of about 15,000. About 50 counter parts guys showed up at his wake, most waited 1.5 hours in the lineup at the funeral home to tell us about Doug. They all said, Doug was my friend...............
He drove my 63 home to his place from the guy I bought it from, thought it worked good. Never did get to drive it with 409 and 4 speed though.
Nice guys don't always finish last, at least in the friends department.
Don

Yes Randy, nothing wrong with going quickly. We all know many people who die slowly in a lot of pain.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I think we all need a reminder to be a little less complacent every now and then... wear the goggles -every- time, use the jack stand -every- time, that sort of thing.
I think the fact that 600 people showed up to a funeral for someone that old (not that 62 is old, but it's not 18) is a huge testament to who he must have been and how he fit into his community... you should be proud!
