I'm actually intrigued by them. I think it might look pretty good if you could dim them down in a controlled manner. Down enough to just light the white graphic and red needles, while at the same time not reflecting as much off the background or lens. It's always difficult to capture the true intensity and look of what your eyes see compared to the photo with led's.
Green might look pretty good.

They are dimmable I found; I actually have less intense/cheaper LEDs too. The nice thing about the 1969 colors (and probably 1970) is that they're a little luminescent - they respond to "black light" which these LEDs seem to be.
Here's with white LEDs. I like it a fair bit as well, and it can be dimmed as needed.
