What has become of the world? One would think that in this age of more enlightened and more connected people that we would be evolving, but it seems as though the opposite is happening.
It is all part of this wacked out society we live in. We really are no different than our American neighbours. Sadly there really is no solution to all this and there is no point in kidding our selves.

A certain percentage of anybody in any country is evil, mentally ill, stupid and brainwashed or any combination of those. Social and other media has made is much easier for these "people" to pick up ideas about how to fulfill what their brain is telling them has to be done. In the US its usually with a gun, in other countries, it's other methods. Statistically it is small but with today's communications it is huge emotionally. What to do. Mourn those who got caught in the evil and live your life anyway. Don't spend all day on any kind of media, particularly Facebook and that ilk.
This is a very busy part of Toronto, before the big amalgamation in 1998 it was the main street of North York, the North York Civic Centre was along the route he took, the old City Hall for North York. Lots of towers and businesses there, Big Federal Government building , you name it just a mini Downtown, plenty of restaurants and theaters. There is a major subway and bus terminus there with Direct access to downtown. It's the first nice day of the year and it would have been very busy at lunch time. My first call was to the manager of one of our offices which was just a bit north of Finch and everyone was accounted for except two were witnesses, they told me they saw 6 people get mowed down, just so very traumatic. The senselessness is so frustrating and unnerving, was only a matter of time until we felt this type of attack in Toronto. I'm taking solace in the fact that the RCMP and Minister of Public Safety are telling us there is no threat to National Security or any affiliation that they can see. Our hearts ache for the dead and injured and their families and all affected. And to the first responders what can we say, apparently there are things that nobody should see and for the arresting officer, man, nothing but Respect and Gratitude.

This is so heart wrenching. What has the world come to. Thinking that 66 grande guy hit the nail on the head with the social and other media thing. When this guy was arrested by the police officer he ask him to kill him. Why couldn't he have just gone some place and finish himself, probably just a coward. Just fell so sorry for EVERYONE that was effected by this senseless act.
Driver named. Alek Minassian a Muslum man 25yrs. old. There are now 10 people dead, terrible news. Brian
Not a Muslim. Does not practice religion. The killer is a spurned nut-job.

A Facebook post that appears to be from Minassian shortly before the van attack suggests his spark may have been frustration or anger over unsuccessful attempts to attract a female companion.
The strange message says: Private (Recruit) Minassian Infantry 00010, wishing to speak to Sgt 4chan please. C23249161. The Incel Rebellion has already begun! We will overthow all the Chads and Stacys! All hail Supreme Gentleman Elliot Rodger!
An incel is a portmanteau of involuntarily celibate and came into wide recognition in 2014 after Elliot Rodger, 22, killed six and injured 14 in Isla Vista, California, before killing himself. In a manifesto, he said he needed to punish women for rejecting him and sexually active men for their success where he failed.
Within the incel subculture, Chads refer to the sexually successful men and Stacys to unattainable women.
I agree, Jean, I just posted the info above to back up Darryl's statement.
In these days the police need to be commended for keeping us safe. Unfortunately all too often the opposite happens without consideration for the horrific circumstances that they have to deal with on a regular basis.
I think we should praise and read about the officer who made the arrest... show him off to younger generations as a role model, stop talking about the lunatic, he doesn't deserve one second of fame... unfortunately media needs sensation... my 2 cents
Terrible news, seeing it unfold from australia. The officer should be praised, already seeing americans giving him a pasting for not shooting, callng him a coward. Revolting. Answers are needed, shooting the guy dead for holding a mobile phone out will not give answers. Answers help the grieving families understand, and not to keep wondering why...

I think the officer should be commended for sure, but I would hate to see this case ending up like the Vince Li case in Manitoba where he was judged not responsible and is back on the street in a few years....can see it happening
While these type of crimes catch our attention in a big way it is worth noting that overall violent crime rates in both Canada and the US have been dropping steadily for decades. While this is obviously an awful crime for those victims and their families the total damage is far greater.
For example look at the indirect consequences of the last 25 years of repeated terrorist attacks by Muslims. Apart from the thousands and thousands of fatalities and countless people injured and crippled in Europe and North America (to say nothing about the carnage in the middle east itself) we have had to spend untold billions and billions protecting our airports and other key facilities, more billions and billions on increased spending to detect and stop terrorists activity through our police and security institutions, trillions in lost productivity by all the time lost in travel and worst of all the countless laws enacted to enable our heightened need for our security. These new laws, many sadly necessary, some perhaps foolish but a natural outgrowth of a scared public demanding action.
So this latest crime, beyond the personal tragedy for the victims and families will result in expensive and ugly "hardening" of our public spaces, even more spending on police and security-spy forces and more demands for reducing our rights and privacy.
The officer should be praised, already seeing americans giving him a pasting for not shooting, callng him a coward. Revolting.
sad.
Also, the American news outlets were initially all over this story like flies on ----, but when it turned out that it was not an ISIS terrorist attack the story was buried in the news cycle quick. It didn't fit the American narrative. The States are sinking.

Another case of someone that was coddled when he was a kid and couldn't find that kind of emotional contact with a female. Poor baby. This country is getting way too soft. When we were growing up in the '70's and '80's we learnt how to take it and that just made us tougher. My dad came from a logging camp family in the '40's and let me tell you the beatings did not stop until I moved out at 17. If we weren't bleeding we weren't allowed to cry when we were beat. He was one mean f*&k let me tell you.
That's just the tip of the "iceberg" when it comes to my life growing up. Suck it up, man up and move on I say.........

Such terrible news. So sad that someone could do something like this in killing innocent people in recognition of the murderous idiot that did this first in California. Some of the people that lost their lives were grandfathers, grandmothers out for a walk, people from other countries visiting their children, foreign students from different countries as well as local Canadians. Just so sad that someone can do something like this. Such a disgusting vial act. Prayers for the victims, and their families and Torontonians.
