Door switch - Whoops pulled the wires off!


I was monkeying with wires under the dash and managed to pop the two wire connectors off the back of the passenger jamb switch (I have a courtesy light option so two wires).  Is there an easy way to reconnect them?  Or do I have to remove the switch and start over more or less?

If I recall, the passenger side is a single contact switch, and there's a Y built into the courtesy light harness. You may be able to reach around and connect, but if you do have a dual contact switch, I'd suggest taking the switch out and connecting the wires.

I have the US map light in my dash. Ideally, I want it so that the map light comes on with the dome lamp, but turning on the map light doesn't turn on the dome light!

I used to have a single wire with a diode and that worked for years. When I had the car restored at MCR, they wired it more like a stock US convertible would be done with the two wires on the passenger side switch, which accomplishes the same thing. So there are two wires, which isn't stock for a Canadian car.

And here's my blue footwell lighting as well as the map light!

If I recall, on the convertibles, the white wire that goes over to the passenger door switch makes a stop at the unused terminal on the map light. That's what makes the map light come on along with other courtesy lights when the doors are opened, or the light knob is turned all the way to the left as that circuit is then grounded.

Back to the original question, I have a feeling you're going to need to pull the passenger door switch to connect it again. Nothing tough, just disconnect your battery first or you may see a few sparks.

Canadian convertibles didn't have the center dash map light... which unused terminal are you thinking of?

I'm not sure how this works now, I've confused myself!


1) When you turn on the map light it sends ground back out its wire to the jamb switch
...but since it's not on with the door closed, the ground path goes no further and doesn't light the dome

2) When you open the passenger door, ground comes from the passenger door pin and lights the map light

BUT

When you open the driver's door, does the map light come on at all? What provides ground? So that's where I'm confused.

The way I do it, I use a diode so the map light can be turned on by any door (or knob) but doesn't backfeed the ground when turned on manually. Seems to work for me.

On my 70 2+2 convertible, I installed a map light and wired it like a 70 US car. There is 2 terminals on the map light, one for +12 volts (coming from the click on its way to the glove box light), and the 2nd terminal is normally unused. Ground to the map light is normally provided through the map light switch, which gets its ground through one of its mounting screws.

For a convertible, the white wire from the passenger door switch is connected to the unused terminal on the map light, providing ground to the map light when any of the doors are opened, or the light knob is turned to the left.

In this configuration, turning on the map light will then also turn on the dome light & footwell lights if so equipped.

I'll start a new thread, it's more involved than I planned! See my "Dome Light" thread...  but on the switch itself, if you had smaller hands, you -might- get the blade connectors back on with the pin in place, but I found it easier to remove the door pin.  Fortunately the kind I had alllowed the threaded portion to turn independently, which solves the problem (twisted up wiring) that I was trying to avoid!
