The picture above shows the unique 1970-71 choke pull off with the "little finger".

This secret feature allows the choke pull off to work independently of the air door, if desired.

I often wonder who came up with this and how it came to be included in normal production.

Would there have been meetings and discussion or did someone somewhere slip it through??

This little finger would probably only be of interest to less than 1% of the owners.

But those 1% appreciate it immensely!!

Thanks
Randy

Randy can you please take me to school I would like to know what the 1%
know. I always learn so much from you !
Is it a performance thing? Or a drivability thing?

I'll give it a try, its not really a performance thing, more like thoughtfulness.

The rod from the choke pull off has a kink in it that acts on the choke arm below when cold.

The kink pushes the arm to open the choke blade a small amount when the Engine first starts.

Cold Engine, choke closed, vacuum moves the pull off, choke opens slightly to prevent overfuelling.

As soon as the choke thermostat gets heat it takes over and opens the choke blade as the Engine warms.

It's a beautiful, mechanical symphony, only those bent in that certain ancient way can appreciate fully.

However, that kinked rod attaches to the secondary air valve lever and applies closed tension on the air door.

Engine vacuum is what supplies this tension but vacuum goes away when the accelerator is floored.

Flooring opens the secondarys and residual vacuum in the choke pull off slows the opening, reducing bog.

Additionally, there is a small spring behind the air valve lever to slow the opening of the secondary air door.

Another beautiful symphony of components balanced to allow smooth opening, without bogging.

Still awake???

Some of us like to experiment and only use the spring to control air valve opening, not the pull off.

The spring is easily adjusted and the tension is easy to evenly change and apply more or less tension.

Some like to work with the pull off to speed up air valve opening but that's another topic.

Its nipple where the vacuum hose attaches can be enlarged or restricted to speed up or slow opening.

So the answer is the unique 1970-71 pull off with the mentioned secret little finger is different.

Say you're a drag racer and want to adjust your air valve to suit what ever your conditions are today.

You could disconnect the rod with the kink or even the choke pull off to allow spring only adjustment.

But, this disables the choke pull off function previously mentioned.

The pull off with the little finger acts on the high idle arm weight, not the lower choke lever arm!!!

This allows normal choke pull off function and the ability to use the air door spring for dampening only.

Older Qjets didn't have this little feature and later ones became more complex, sometimes using 2 pull offs.

"This secret feature allows the choke pull off to work independently of the air door, if desired.

I often wonder, who did that???

Thanks

Randy

interesting - thanks for sharing this!
I have dabbled in mostly Pontiac Quadrajets, but have a couple pre-smog Chevy units too - I'm going to see if any of mine appear to be the same (iirc I grabbed a 1970 chevy passenger car 350 carb last year)

I'm glad you noticed and understood!!

I've never seen the finger on any other Qjet but no doubt I haven't seen them all.

Alternatively, I've never seen a 1970-71 Chevy Qjet without so you should be good.

Thanks
Randy
