RE: GM dealers of Toronto

Cool.  The North York sign reminds me of the BOWMAC sign in Vancouver that I've seen photos of.

I wonder if it is still standing...

So far so good. This sounds like it should be a great thread.

Below are a couple of pics I took this millenium.

The Golden Mile vintage sign not long before they pulled it down; a real 1950s / early 60s sign:

Golden_Mile.jpg

Alex Irvine, but only the sign in the background with some new 2005 GMC medium duty trucks:

Alex_Irvine.jpg

Alex Irvine moved the dealership from Scarborough to Markham soon after, then it closed down upon Alex's death.

Back in '69 they sold an Impala convertible with buckets & the LS1 427. I saw the car on e-Bay several years ago in Texas as an SS427.

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada circa 1969. Taken on steps of City Hall looking north-west to Main Street with Bay Street to the left. Visible in the lot across the street is a relatively new 1967 Chevelle SS396 convertible in Nantucket Blue. The far left shows a new 1969 Firebird at the service entrance to the old Hamilton Motor Products dealer (Pontiac-Acadian-Beaumont-Buick-Cadillac-GMC):

Re: Alex Irvine. It was on Lawrence near Midland to 2006. A neighbor worked for them and went with them when they went to Markham as a GMC dealer.

Heritage Ford is still on Kingston Road near Midland. I didn't realize how long they have been there. A Ford-Monarch dealer? Monarch as a unique Canadian brand was last seen in 1961. As a little kid I always wondered what that car with the crown in the grille was.

Great thread.
Might you have pics of Rumble in 1965 and York Mills in 1964?
Pics of the dealerships would match my cars.

This is the best I can do. Enjoy! Most of the photos I have are when the dealership opened.

Thanks for sharing! I have quite a bit of information on Gorries Chevrolet. Did you know that it was originally a Ford dealership and A.D. Gorrie worked for Ford corporate?

I know this is a GM thread, but there was a well-established Mopar dealership in east-end Toronto that was along Kingston Road (the old Highway 2). Jim Davidson Motors was a fixture since the 1940s. They had sold DeSotos and were a Dodge dealer. Not far from my house, they often had a selection of new Dodge Vipers on the lot, and several neighbors worked there back in the day.

One day in the fall of 2008, without warning they shut down after Daimler-Chrysler insisted the dealership get an expensive makeover. They said "no way" and shut down suddenly. I heard about it and grabbed my camera. Unfortunately the signs had already come down. The style of the dealership was real 1960-70s Chrysler reminiscent of Grand Spaulding.

Hope you don't mind hmm

No problem here Cam........my fav part of this hobby is Old (50s/60s) Car Dealerships........smile.

Maybe we should change the name to Dealerships of Toronto.

The big 3 - I loved them all......and even today I drive something from GM/Ford/Mopar....biggrin

agree, we should just change the thread to Dealerships of Toronto!

One of my hobbies is to collect photos of old dealerships from Toronto.

Glendale Ford (1635 Aveneur Rd) Buildings still exist.

Hogan Chevrolet-Oldsmobile when they moved to Scarborough. Their old location became Mainway Ford.

Birchdale Lincoln-Mercury located near Birchmount and Lawrence. It became Birchcliff Lincoln Mercury then Birchcliff Ford-Lincoln. Dealership franchise was bought out by Evans Ford-Lincoln and closed in 2001.

------

I have pretty much every dealership in Toronto. Some photos of the dealerships are hard to find, but I have the ads of every dealership at the minimum.

In 1956, Park Manor Ford opened for business in Toronto at Lawrence ave and Younge St. Park Manor sold British Ford as well as the full Ford line along with the Monarch line. In 1973, Ford terminated Park Manor's franchise agreement as they were moving to a new location, Richmond Hill. The dealer became Twin Hills Mercury, now known as Twin Hills Ford-Lincoln.

Celebrating their 46th anniversary, Mount Pleasant AMC located in Toronto remodeled their showroom and building in 1970.

Want a Boss 302, Boss 429 or Shelby GT500? Head over to Wood-Larkin Ford! Note: All three cars in this ad are still out there. The Boss 429 was Grabber Orange and resides in the USA. The Shelby is currently on Autotrader in Newfoundland and one of their Boss 302s is still in Toronto!

Formerly McIntosh Mercury, Gateway Mercury began business on Feb 14, 1967 and Al Soko was the President and founder. Not only did Gateway sell Mercurys but they sold English Fords as well. Gateway sold many Cobra Jet Cougars and Montegos as well as other 427 and 428 Mercurys. Younge Steeles Ford is currently located at the former Gateway location. In the early 90s Gateway moved to a different location and they ceased operations in 2006

Thanks for doing these. When Hogan moved away from Danforth the existing location was renamed to Peter Burdon Pontiac.

Mainway I think moved into where City Pontiac/Buick was at Danforth and Main.

Have any thing from Heritage Ford from around the Fall of 1969 ?
