RE: Former new car dealers of Toronto

Bob Johnston Chevrolet-Oldsmobile on Kingston Road near Guildwood 1972-2008: https://www.google.ca/maps/@43.7573513,-79.1989238,3a,75y,130.86h,80.77t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1suv_TMUA-mMFEtVhwwY6d0Q!2e0!7i3328!8i1664

It has been vacant since March 2008 except for 2017 when it was used as a movie prop. I think it was the fictitious Salico County Police Department for a couple of weeks.

Remember Robertson Motors on Danforth?

They began in 1946 as a Ford-Monarch dealer. They switched to Chevy in July of 1950. Prior to Robertson Motors, the dealership was called Evans Motors(Ford-Monarch)

That makes sense since the older part of the dealership was at Rhodes. Wonder when they built the new lot accross the street ?

They opened their new lot in 1968.

P.S. here is a photo of Ted Davy. Not the best, but better than nothing.

That's the place. Wonder what was there before them ? It's now a parking lot.

In the fall of 1961 there was a small gas station and Robertson's Used Car Lot. I remember it vividly cause they had a 61 Impala 348

3 speed on the used car lot that I tried to get my dad to buy....no way he had an Oldsmobile and wasn't buying a Chev.

Our neighbor had traded that 61 Impala in on a 62 white Biscayne 409/409 4 speed.........what a terror in the east end.

Nothing prior to Robertson. It was empty land. Robertson had two used car lots: 1555 Danforth and 1145 Danforth.

Walked by there the other day. Hard to imagine there were that many car dealers across Danforth.

my '69 442 convertible came from Robertson. That car was loaded. Had 32 options. Unfortunately I never got the printout from GM vintages. Owned from 1982-2000

Here were the dealers on Danforth as of 1972. Mainway was owned by the same group that owned Northtown Ford and Leaside Lincoln-Mercury. Mainway closed in 1974 and became Detonia Ford. Later on, Dentonia would move to another location.

Where was Leaside Mercury ? I remember Dentonia Ford at 2300. I've got a 78 or 79 brochure from them.

Leaside was at 930 Millwood Road near Laird. They were in business for less then 8 months. The location was HOJ Industries' headquarters before and after the closure of Leaside L-M. HOJ was the parent company of Mainway, Leaside, Northtown, and Yorkview Ford.

I have a lot of other dealers in the Scarborough area that I found too. The above ad earlier is the closest I got to finding a picture of Mainway. I am close to having a picture/photo of every Ford, L-M dealer in the GTA.

That Leaside dealer was the one I asked about before. Blinked and they disappeared.

Any idea what HOJ stood for ? Somebodies initials or ?

I have no idea what HOJ stands for. HOJ INdustries also owned Gateway L-M and a couple AMC dealers too. And yeah, Leaside barely existed. I only have the ad they made when they opened, but no photo of the actual dealership.

Do you have any other requests for dealers? I can search what I have either by name of dealer or address.
