Brake job tip
(Preview)
Thanks to Ghost Post for pointing this out to me - the adjusting screw spring that holds the bottoms of the brake shoes together needs to have maximum clearance from the star wheel of the adjusting screw assembly. It's easy to see which end goes where, but it makes a difference how it is hooked into the ho...

(Preview)
How the heck do I get them off to inspect them and clean/grease them? The fronts came off without a problem. I would be happy just to get the rear-ends front plate off to inspect the pads. Are there better greases to use? Regular bearing grease OK?Cheers,C

(Preview)
Well the Left side was hard enough (the rear shackle bushing was scraping the fuel filler), but the Right rear shackle bushing won't come out. It is about 1/2 inch shy of clearing the spare tire well. No matter how I pound on its bolt or wiggle it. If anyone has a trick to get that old shackle out (and the new...

1955-57 Rear Spring Removal Procedure
(Preview)
The 1955 Chevrolet Shop manual has a procedure for rear spring removal. I followed that procedure on one side of my 1956 Canadian Pontiac (which has chassis identical to the Chevrolet for 1956) and it worked OK, but did not help me with removal of the right rear shackle the spare tire well interfered wi...

Installing and lowering mid 70s Camaro/Firebird rear end in 53/54 Cdn Pontiac
(Preview)
I found that an mid 70s Camaro or Firebird 10 bolt rear end fits beautifully in a 53/54 Cdn Pontiac. You can use the original springs if you make the lowering blocks and spring plate as described on my rear suspension webpage. One thing that I would do differently is to put anti-seize in the rubber suspen...
