What is this on the dash of a 59 Buick Electra?

I've seen traffic light reflectors and compasses but not quite sure what this is. Anyone can shed some light?

High beam dimmer. Cadillacs had these as well.

Do you mean like the TWILIGHT SENTINEL control? Or "eye?"

Yes, automatic headlight dimmer. That black knob at the back is the dial to adjust the sensitivity of the dimmer.

It was known as Autronic Eye, first used in 1952 then perfected over the decades. My late model Cadillac has a system that does both turn on high beams when needed and shut them down when sensing light from an oncoming car.

Saw a 64 Impala with the Autronic Eye option, it was rare but available from the factory. That's a nice dash on that Buick.
