I'm going to try this here...Has/have any of you guy got your original keys? These are pics of my keys.I'm pretty sure they are original but not positive.I've been to two Gm dealers to get the codes and they seem reluctant to help.I don't know why...I know there is a fee but it shouldn't be hard...should it? Anyone have any experiences to share?
The original keys were Briggs and Stratton. There was a knock out part that had the key code on it. In the owners manual it told the owner to knock the insert with the key code out of the key and keep it in a safe place. On some of the inserts the hole was too small to fit a standard key ring, so you had no choice but to remove it.
Call a local well established lock & key place to see if they have any. I know Heads Lock & Key here in Calgary used to have the Briggs & Stratton blanks.

The dealer should be able to provide the codes if you have the VIN and proof of ownership. Worse case you would have to pull the locks and a good lock shop could make new keys. I have a set of new reproduction key blanks(non briggs) like the ones pictured, if you are interested PM me your address and I will send them to you.

I believe that you can get the key codes from Vintage Vehicle Services if you have a Canadian car. There is an additional cost above what the vehicle package costs. I have never used the service so can't speak to the requirements of getting this information.

It used to be $40 to get those codes from Vintage when we were still a GM dealer but that's 10 years ago now so I'm sure it's likely gone up.

The codes are also listed on your build tag. Mine are also listed in my owner's protection plan book and the original inventory card that I have.
I read one of my VVS documents from this year and as Carl said it now states:
"We also would like to inform you that the original key codes for your vehicle are available, just contact your local General Motors dealer Parts Department with proof of ownership. Key codes are available back to 1946 on Canadian built/sold vehicles"

WOW! Now this is why I joined this forum! I tell anyone I meet with a Pontiac to hurry up and do the same.So yup I got my VVS package and as stated above ..Key codes available back to 46. $60.00 At Carter Gm in Burnaby..they phone VVS for the info having verified ID..Haven't paid that yet because the counter guy wanted pics of my keys first to see if he can find any..so I posted here and now thanks to Darryl I found my brain and looked in my protection plan booklet and they they are!! . I now also know that my keys are worn out copies. So now if I get correct blanks a local key cutting service can cut using my codes..? Is that correct?

Yes, someone local must cut by code. It may take a little bit of digging.

I've actually been meaning to go to the GM dealership beside my work (in High River Alberta) to piece-meal out new locks and keys;
it will be a bit more money this way, but I think I'm doing this anyway.

I had Highwood Lock & Key in High River cut me new GM keys from the old keys for the 70 454 Laurentian. He looked at the old ones, figured out the codes, and cut new ones.
Later I realized I actually had the codes on the original bill of sale.

I just called Heads Lock & Key here in Calgary. They still have the Briggs & Stratton blanks, and are readily available. A local well established lock & key place should be able to source the blanks, and cut you need keys using the codes you provide.
When Heads Lock & Key cut me keys for my 57 Chevy back in the early 90's, they popped out the ignition cylinder out and got the code off the side of it.

If you have a collection of about 20 of these old keys, you can start almost any old gm car. They were not very secure until locking steering columns came out.

So true. My Dad always told the story of how he was driving a friend's car home from a dance. They left the dance and walked to the friends and he was having trouble getting the door unlocked. The police came and held the flashlight until he got the door unlocked. Lucky for Dad it was long before the breathalizer and drunk driving laws were what they are today. They all got in the car and when Dad tried to start it the ignition key wouldn't turn. After awhile, he realized he was using the keys to his 62 Biscayne and the friend's car was a 62 Strato Chief, both were black with red interior.

A friend of mine had a 1977 f150 and his key would open the doors and start my 1981 f100. It wasnt only GM vehicles that reused key codes.

Just for fun here is some of my key madness! Some of these go back to the twenties. My father in law was a founding member of the Sunshine Coast Drag Race association and a hot rodder from way back..He owned a few rare cars from the 1920's.A Rickenbacker and a Diana amongst them..The newer keys are from a time in the 90's when I worked inmanagement in a GM dealership bodyshop. We handled a stolen recovery for every day of the month at that time! I did all of the lock cylinder recoding myself in house..I gave this "line" of new keys to my son to play with.

Just click the eBay link at the top of the page and search "GM key blanks"
Were the originals Briggs and Stratton manufactured?
If so, I appear to have the originals to the 67. Never knew these keys said Briggs on them...never looked close enough to see it!

You can get year specific original style blanks pretty cheap on eBay if you shop around (left). Notice my original trunk key with tag intact (right).
