69 SD Found???

I have a question.... I'm new to this site, and not sure if this topic has been discussed anywhere...

Not too far from me, in the back of a field I found a 69 Beaumont, the car is mostly complete and intact, minus engine and trans and is RUSTY.  The car has an SD hood (junk), disc brakes, factory installed bucket seats, no console but a factory hump for a 4 speed and the pedals are still in the car.  It also has a 12 bolt sunk in the mud.  The car is actually covered by a bush which saved the vinyl dash, and most of the trim inside, except the dash metal is rotten all the way to the pad on the DS and I think the VIN must have fallen through the floor to the ground, as it is not in the car that I can find.  It has holes in the glove box where it looks like an emblem was, the lower dash trim is a woodgrain insert like the Tempest/Lemans, and the car has Deluxe door and Quarter trim panels.  The car was orignialy yellow, or so it looks, but was painted white at some time.  It has Pontiac Rally II's on it, and from the rusted plate, was left there in '78.  Can anyone help me figure out if this car is a 69 SD by looking at the Cowl tag?  The things that throw me are the Deluxe door panels, and the woodgrain.  Also I didn't think the 69's actually had emblems, I thought they were vinyl.  The hood I am assuming was changed at some point b/c it was red, then yellow, and is not white like the rest of the car.
Thanks,
Jesse

Hi Jesse
Judging by your description with a woodgrain dash and an emblem on the glovebox the car is probably a 68. Does the car have vent windows? When you say Deluxe door panels does it have an emblem that says Deluxe? No Deluxe cars ever had factory bucket seats.
If you can get the information from the cowl tag it will say if it is a 68 or 69. If it is a 69 SD396 the cowl tag will have either L34 or L35 and B79.
Find out what you can and I will tell you if it is or isn't a real 69 SD

JHResto,

Get in touch with me and include the following information. VIN number found on the dash board drivers side you can see it through the windshield its thirteen characters long. The cowl tag is located under the hood on the drivers side next to the drivers side hood hinge.
the cowl tag will have three lines of codes on it. Well need them all.

I'll decode what you send and tell you what it is.

Guys,

The car does not have vent windows, the cowl tag says its a '69, it has '69 header, grille, tail lights, fenders, bumpers and dash and it does say Deluxe on the door panels... The Cowl tag is hard to read, covered in tar or undercoating... I think it says "something35" and B79 and C09 maybe? The VIN number looks to have rotted right out of the car with the rest of the forward dash, or it fell on the ground through the hole in the floor. It has factory gauges in it, and only has 21000 on the ODO.

I am going to try and get out there again to take some pictures, but it is on private property, and the home owner wasn't home the last couple times I was there.

Do either of you have a list of of what the codes on the cowl tags mean? There are a few cars around here sitting in wrecking yards, driveways and barns... There is even said to be a '69 SD convertible in a garage near my house, but it is only a shell, and I have no way to know what it really is. Some further education may help to figure it out.

Hi Jesse
If you can get all the info from the cowl tag and send it to me I can tell you what it is. On the cowl tag below Made in Canada on the left it will say ST69. right beside that will be a 5 digit code 73??? then OS followed by some more numbers
Below ST69 will be TR then 3 numbers then one or two digits and a letter. Then 4 digits then PNT
Also on the rear tail panel beside the reverse lights does it have the chrome trim like your car?
There were never any 69 SD convertibles made.
The RPO codes are readily available on a few websites or if you want I can send them to you.

Brad,

Thanks for the info, I'll try and get the info soon.  It is raining and that car is low in the field so not fun to get at.

If you would be so kind as to forward the RPO info I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Jesse

Hi Jesse,

You can contact me with the complete VIN number and cowl tag information. Get in touch with me if all you have is the cowl tag. That will be able to tell us something about the car.

As for RPO codes try here http://cdnclassics.chevelles.net/64_72opt.htm

I spent over a month going through the list and seperating the options by year, and cross referenced to make sure I had it correct. If you find any errors let me know..

just a question for sd 396,ive never seen a actual 69 sd in person,i know in 69 they were now a option instead of a model and the 738 was dropped,im asuming they were 736 cars like the chevelle 396 s or were they 734 cars? im asuming the sport deluxe cars have nothing to do with 734 deluxes, and it was an option on the 736 custom line?
also i know it should read L34,was a L35 available?

The picture in the centerfold of the brochure is identical to my car, hubcaps and all.
The Sport Deluxe option was not available on the Custom, only the Deluxe. You could get a L35 or L34. Not all Chevelle SS396 cars were based on the Malibu. It was also an option on the 300 Deluxe.

Hey SD 396,

As you seem quite knowledgable on trim code I thought i might ask you a question. Do you know what 9SS is for the trim.

I suspect dark green, with top and stripe in "S" is that Black or White ? Or am I all wrong ?

It's on a 68 SD stick car a friend is pursuing.

Thanks...
Gary
