65-66 B-BODY 12 bolt rear end.


I have a 66 B-body with 2.73 open rear.. I have a 66 Chevelle Posi w/3.08 gears..2 Years gone by, and no posi.. Anyone have a complete rear end to bolt in? I can change it , but not the gears... Any one know someone, who could change gears in car for me?  cry  (nothing getting done CARL)

The only person I trust to do rearends is in Chatham. Canada Gear / Bowtie Muscle. His name is Brad and the phone number is 519 354 5016. He is a Moser dealer and will do rearends, transmissions, etc. You can take him the whole car or just the rearend. I called him the other day about a clutch fork but he has nothing either. I know he will be at the swap meet on Sunday.
 Is the 66 Chevelle rearend a 12 bolt?

The posi is from 66 396 chevelle, and included the 3.08 rimg and pinion  I bought it on e-bay 2 years ago   12 bolt but no housing

I need help getting this straight. You have a 66 Chevelle 12 bolt diff. It's complete, or missing the center section?

It is the one with the 3.08 gears?

If I can find a rear, all set up, or another posi and gears,  I will sell 12 bolt posi I have.  Does the chevelle posi, have any numbers on it that ,would be more important, to a chevele/beaumont owner?   Carlsmile

I bought the complete posi and he sent me the gears with it  The housing wouldnt fit in the box..  so everyting but the rear housing which I didnt need..I can post a picture

I will PM you my number...remember there is NO RUSH to this, as the posi has been here for 2 years.. I can do this long, after I get the 4 speed in. Taylor 55 is interested in chevelle posi because of its narrowness. I only need something to spin both wheels.. changing whole rear end is within my mechanical abilities..Did you see the origonal fork for my body style on e-bay  Its climbing like a space shuttle.  lol    I am going to garage to photo my posi stuff.. Carl, you have the posi carrier, 3:08 gears, Chevelle axles, but no housing. That carrier should fit with the 3:08 gears into your 65-66 12 bolt housing  providing this was used as a combination by the previous owner. Use your original axles as the chevelle axles will be too short.There are different 12 bolt posi carriers for different series of gears. I think it is 3:73 4:10 4:56 is one series and the other is 3:42 3:07 2:73 . I am sure someone will correct this if i am wrong. The thickness of the crown gear makes the difference with the carriers. If you do not use the axles from the Chevelle I am interested in those.  Thanks Al

The parts book says 2.29, 2.56 and 2.73 is one carrier.

3.07, 3.31, 3.55, 3.73 is another carrier.

4.10, 4.56, 4.88 is another carrier.

So basically, it appears the first digit of the ratio determines which carrier. And with that said, as always, if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me!

Does the parts book give any code numbers as to ID the carrier?  So as long  Carl purchased a matching carrier and gears  it fits into his 65--66 12 bolt housing. Richmond also sells gears 4:10 and up to fit the 3 series carrier without using the spacer. The crown gear is made wider.So Carl it is up to you to ID which carrier you have and decide which gears you want to use. If it is a 3 series and you want to run 4:10   I have a good used set of Richmond gears. If you have the Chevelle axles I am interested in them.   Al

I ran 225 70 15s on 8" Corvette wheels on my 65 Parisienne Convt and never had a clearance issue. One thing I did notice however was that sometimes one wheel would be a little closer to the fender lip than the other. At the time I put it down to the panhard bar being a little off centre depending on the load in the car, or possibly a weak spring on one side, but I'm not sure what was the issue. On my 69 Parisienne I run the 225 70 15 tire on 8.5 inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels with no issues, and I run that same tire on 8" Corvette wheels on my 68 Caprice, also with no issues.
