sold by the "litre" up here, today was $1.08 a litre. 4 litres is about 1 us gallon, so $4.32 a us gallon. almost 1/2 the price is #%&#@! taxes. furious
E85 hasn't caught on up here yet.

I think there should be legislation in place to require oil in Canada's oil sands be for Canadians first and other countries second. And, like other high producing countries, we should pay little for it.

When we were looking at a newer vehicle this week I fiqured out what would happen to us IF gas want stupid  @ 1.40                                                  We drive (20 thou km) 12,000 miles a year on our main family car... at a average of 13 mpg divided into 12,000 x$1.05 here today in Clinton. = $969.00      12,000 divided by 13 average mpg times 1.40 equals 1292.00     thats 323.00 per year  more     THATS 6.21 per week  or 4.5 Tims Hortons @1.38 per large coffee...    NOW DONT GET ME WRONG, I think we are getting screwed by the oil companies and government, but we could survive...  just my 2 cents  Carl        p.s.  my Pontiac can make 7 full throttle runs for $20.00biggrin

I see there is a kit out to convert Chevy S10's to electric. Too bad it's 9 grand and my S10 is too rotten to bother. Still, it'd be neat have an EV as the daily driver. I wonder if they would notice at work if I had an extension cord running from my truck to the building.....

I can get 87 octane here for a little over $3.00 here is SC. We have some of the cheapest gas prices in the US.

Well.... here in the land of oil & gas (Alberta) we are paying $1.08 / Litre or 3.8 litres/ US gallon = $4.10/ US gallon for 87 Octane gas, and we are currently paying $1.20/litre for diesle or $4.56 / US gallon. The irony of this is that with Alberta being the third largest producer of petroleum products we are paying the most for our gas & diesle..... and we don't have any for sale and a number of our service stations due to outages at our refineries. We ship everything we produce out of province to market. Go figure!!! This is what government calls the "Alberta Advantage"

We are paying $1.15 a litre this week in Timmins for regular gas. I heat my house with propane and was locked in in August for a year at 74.9 cents a litre. I am glad I got locked in with the propane because this week it was $1.01 a litre for those that did not. Plus another 6% gst. Because of the high cost of heating and the long cold winter I do not heat my shop for the winter any more. I store vehicles from Nov 1 until the spring when the snow is finally melted.  Al

In 1991 I had a gravel truck that ran on propane and the price was 9 cents/Litre. The dealer told me that the price was going to go to 12 cents the following month and that we should write letters of protest. Well we did and and the price went to 14 cents within a year! How much snow have you got in Timmins? If it is anything like Ottawa the snow may not finish melting until June!! John

We have accumulated more snow than in Ottawa by what I've seen on TV.  The Ottawa area has had more severe snow dumps than us but if its not -20 to -30 below we get snow every day.  I am running out of room to plow the snow and had to get a backhoe to pile the snow banks .It is nice today -10 and sunny, the wife is heading out downhill skiing and I am watching the Nascar .  Al

Gas in Italy is close to $8.00 a gallon right now.

The fact of the matter is that oil is a commodity which has its price set by world markets and world demand.  The only difference is the taxes local governments decide to levy on top of it.  Whether it is produced in Canada or anywhere else, why would a producer accept less than the world price for it? Why would a Canadian producer sell it for any less to Canadians?  Do Canadian gold mines sell gold at a discount to Canadians?  Would you sell your house at a discount to a Canadian as opposed to a foreigner?  If you owned a company that produced products that could be sold on the world market for $X, how would you like it if the government came along and forced you to sell it to Canadians at  $X-Y?  As for places like Iran and Venezeula, they use the price of gas a social control to help make up for all the other shortcomings in those societies.  Would any of you really like to live there?

The increase in demand for oil from China, India and the rest of the developing world is growing exponentially.  Gas is never going to be "cheap" again, it's real cost will continue to go up so get used to it and buy shares in oil companies if you want to share some of the gain/offset some of the pain.

I agree with you to a point. Taxes on fuel are locally controlled, and there is a world market price, but let's be honest. It's not totally about demand. Specuclators and commodity traders drive the wild price fluctuations more than anything else. They're reaping in big bucks with the "flavor of the week" crisis. There's no end to the excuses used to justify price increases.
My personal opinion would be to nationalize the Canadian Petroleum industry, set our own price within our borders, and sell at world prices to the rest of the world. Except for China.
Screw China.

My everyday car is a Cadillac Deville with a 300 HP Northstar 11:1 compression so I need 91 octane, cost me $1.21/litre on Wednesday at a Canadian Tire gas bar (it's Esso) near my office on the North York- Scarborough border.

BTW, 70% of Western Canadian oil production is exported to the USA, no problem with that we're neighbours BUT in the East we import from overseas because demand is so great. Can anyone figure this out?

If my 92 S10 was clean and rust free, I'd consider this:
UVic-08.jpg
ELECTRIC POWER!
The kit is sold in BC and you retain your 5 speed trains (but now you have clutchless shifting!) Range is about 240kms -perfect for me.
It's pricey-over 10k plus another 3 grand for batteries. I suppose if you found a newer S10 with a blown motor dirt cheap it might be worth it.  I'm all for alternative energy-JUST DON'T BAN MY OLD GAS POWERED CAR!
I also wonder what would happen when it came time to get an emissions test? I can just imagine the red tape..
Here's a link to the conversion website:
